Outline of Presentation  Introduction  Aims of the Survey  UK Consensus Statement  Format of Questions  Response Rate  Resources Currently Used  Other Resources Cited  Wish list of Resources

Introduction  PhD - Clinical Communication Title: Consultation Skills Training and Practice: A Mixed-Methods Exploration of Perspectives from Junior Doctors, their Patients and other Clinicians Supervised by Dr Alexia Papageorgiou  Consultation skills tutor - UEA, Norwich

Aims of the Survey The survey was designed with the objective of exploring what resources Medical Schools across the UK are currently using in their clinical communication teaching. But also to establish a ‘wish list’ from clinical communication educators which might include resources that were seen as missing from those which are currently used and available.

UK Consensus Statement: Used as a framework for the survey

Format of Questions Posed under each theme a: In current use? What resources do you currently use in your teaching of clinical communication skills? It would be useful if you could provide as much detail as possible about the source of materials. For example, website addresses, links and whether the material is copyrighted or not. b: Other resources? Do you know of any other available resources in this area? Please add details here and any knowledge of copyright. c: Wish list? What type of resources/materials would you find useful for teaching clinical communication in this area that are not currently available?

Response Rate 5 responses to follow up questions 54% response rate 22 Medical Schools Out of 33

Resources Currently Used Across Medical Schools: Main Findings for currently used resources and practices Collaborative Practices: using other departments/ organisations UKCCC - E- learning resource RCGP training materials In-house DVDs (some copyrighted some not) YouTube

Other Resources Currently Used Across Medical Schools: Other resources used Kings Fund: Patients preference document Connected Advanced Communication Skills Programme: Exercises for explanation and planning Online assessment and feedback instrument (Keele)

Other Resources cited by participants Materials cited by respondents when asked to add anything that had not been covered in the survey Feedback skills DVD - Medical error and apology- Scottish Public Services Ombudsman, March 2011: Our guidance on apology

Wish List Resources suggested for teaching consultation tasks and skills Video clips which specifically demonstrate particular skills, designed to demonstrate specific skills (in contrast to UKCCC E-learning package, where skills have been highlighted) More videos of students performing consultations as opposed to experienced doctors to demonstrate common problems experienced in consultations

Wish List Resources suggested for teaching consultation tasks and skills A larger bank of videos (perhaps shorter as UKCCC videos too long) from different clinical contexts e.g GP, psychiatry More video clips using a diverse group of patients and clinicians. More up to date videos A central bank of videos

Resources suggested for teaching consultation tasks and skills Further on-line resources offering examples of specific tasks: explaining a procedure /diagnosis, gaining consent, breaking bad or difficult news, inter-professional conflict. More material that focuses on integration rather than the 'list of skills' approach More staff! Wish List

Thanks for taking part in the survey and listening today!!
