CSG Panel – May 10, 2006 Key Lessons for New Data Centers Project overview Requirements Lessons learned Going Forward
Project overview Early 99 – Eviction notice - Center for Govt Studies June 99 – Hire Project Manager Sept 99 – June 00 – Feasibility Study/Site Selection June 00 – June 01 – Design/Community June 01 – Nov 2002 construction Nov-Dec 02 – Move in
Requirements Robust, Flexible and Scalable –4,000 -> 5,000 sqft + –Redundant Fiber –55 watts/sqft – EYP 40 –Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) – Dual 450Kva –Diesel Generator – 2000KW –Redundancy - PDU/CRAC – N+1/5 –Advanced Fire Protection – FM200 FF – Pre-action Sprinkler –Environmental Monitoring –RCR/DCCR structure – EMC XSP Administrative Computing focus
Lessons Hire a full time PM – DCTR experience Site selection – understand all implications of usage –Mixed use – labs, security, post move in construction Delays impact project team and create risk –We went thru (3) Electrical design engineers –Material availability – floor tiles Involve IT (and other) vendors as early as possible Phased moves vs. “big bang” approach –Minimize risk –Process improvement Continuously drill down with the move details –CAMAIL move example –Loading dock usage sequence
Lessons Understand the impact on the staff –Design involvement Complete the entire building and commission the data center prior to relocation –Occupancy permit issues Pre-stage network - IP and SAN – Addtl $$ Allow at least 3 month between completion of the building and relocation of the IT infrastructure Data Center growth planning: a difficult balance between having capacity and over spending Rack KW instead of floor space 36” floors – air flow Layout entire datacenter floor plate –Rack layout –Density plan
Going Forward Better job engaging schools Identify anchor customers Research Computing –“Get out of the way” DR – Sync with SunGard contract How Many Data Centers Which Tier (Uptime institute) Virtualization Technology –APC –Angstrom
Data Center Trends (Data Provided by Computer World Article 11-04) Today2009 Watts per square foot Cost per square foot to build and equip an data center $400$5,000 Cost for a 10,000 square-foot-facility $4M$50M
