Market Conditions and Funding What’s the big deal?

Market Conditions and Funding Copyright © 2010 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates. CEC is proving to be a tough competitor. -This activity has helped to ‘heat’ the market.

Understanding the Ontario FSL Framework Implementation begins in and extends over a ten-year period. Boards are required to develop and submit FSL plans that include measurable goals and to report on progress. 3 Goals identified in the Framework: 1)Increase student confidence, proficiency and achievement in FSL. 2)Increase percentage of students studying FSL until graduation. 3)Increase student, educator, parent, and community engagement. Differentiated UPS 11 Objectives: Improve student engagement and confidence in FSL and thereby improve FSL retention Perceived Challenges: Students are not motivated and do not like French New technology will be too expensive to implement It is really difficult for French teachers to personalize their teaching and use technology á la carte Key Initiatives: Update obsolete resources Personalize teaching and learning in FSL classrooms Implement technology Possible solutions: Complete FSL program that is entirely digital to save cost PD for FSL teachers on how to personalize their teaching and how to motivate students Access to digital resources that will get students excited about FSL Get parents involved in FSL programming We’ve worked with another district (Grand Erie District School Board) to create a customized package – The Complete Canadian Learning Exchange Resource Package for FSL. It has enabled the district to get access to a complete Core FSL program for Grades 4, 5, and 6 entirely digitally. Now, teachers are connecting with students and parents online and they love the ability to share a variety of engaging material including interactive etexts, songs, videos, whiteboard activities and voice- recording functionality. It is really beginning to make a difference to their students’ enjoyment of FSL. It is also helping their teachers plan more effectively as they work to meet curriculum expectations. Perhaps we should discuss what might work for your district?

UPS Scenario Objectives: Implement a literacy-based approach for our Intermediate FSL programs and provide help to our Teachers on how to plan for, and meet the expectations of the new curriculum. Perceived Challenges Key Initiatives: - Provide PD for teachers on effective literacy practices in FSL - Committee review of available FSL literacy materials for grades 7 and 8. Highlights from our Integrated Plans

Integrated Plan Strategy Our strategy in the Ontario market will focus on customer segmentation and we’ve sought to classify school districts as 1) centralized purchasers, 2) de-centralized purchasers with strong curriculum leadership, and 3) de-centralized purchasers. Our marketing and sales approach must be to listen to the unique challenges and define solutions for these customers based on their profiles and their imperatives for success in their FSL programs. For the first category of school districts—centralized purchasers—we will continue to work with curriculum leaders to discover, qualify and define solutions. Several of these districts have requested committee presentations and pilots and we expect this to continue. This is an opportunity to work closely with curriculum leaders; understand their key initiatives, funding plans, and so on; and support them through their decision-making and piloting processes. For the de-centralized boards we will look to organize events in high-priority boards to engage teachers, qualify their concerns, and promote Echos Pro at the school level to encourage requests for funds for classroom resources Copyright © 2010 Pearson Education, Inc. or its affiliates.
