The work was done by: Alessandra Lombardini, Katia Del Curto and Elena Martocchi.

The project about health at school: Course on affective and sexual education; Alcohol and related effects; Nicotinism; Health and mental disorders; Organ donation.

COURSE ON AFFECTIVE and SEXUAL EDUCATION Objectives: - educational debate on sexuality - promoting a healthy and responsible expression of sexuality in a harmonious development of the individual, through correct information and shared moments of reflection. The classes involved in this project are: 2 commercial and 2 surveyor. The project takes place according to the following phases: starting up in small groups, class discussion, classes, initial and evaluation questionnaires. The activity is organized in: 1.initial planning and final check with class teachers 2. two meetings with parents to present the activities three two-hour meetings with the class

External collaborators particularly a psychologist and a professional nurse working for the local health authority, take part in this project. Literature used in the project is made available by ASL (local health authority). At the end there is a class discussion with the science teacher and with those teachers who are interested in the problem, to check the outcome of the project.

ALCHOL AND RELATED EFFECTS Objectives are to inform about: - the pharmacological properties of alcohol - how addiction and tolerance start - diseases caused by alcohol abuse - road accidents caused by alcohol The classes involved in this project are: 2 high school, 3 surveyor, 3 commercial and 4 commercial The project takes place with: active listening, dialogue, direct experiences, screening of a DVD and a guided tour to the historical gallery of the local fire brigade.

The activity goes from November to May. There are two meetings, both lasting two hours in each class, with a responsible person of ACAT in Sondrio, and a one-hour meeting involving all the classes together with the firemen of Chiavenna and with a doctor, during which a movie about driving under the influence of alcohol is screened. After that there is a one-hour meeting in each class with the police about topics regarding road safety education, the observance of rules and civil and criminal liability. The works and the project are presented to the public in a final meeting. All the meetings take place in the school assembly hall.

NICOTINISM Objectives: To know about smoke addiction (pharmacological and psychological) To know the social aspects of smoking To prepare some questionnaires about smoking in schools To give correct information about the effects of nicotinism To stimulate reflections about smoke addiction and the exposure to passive smoking To face the problem of air pollution Addressees: first classes Methodology: Working with classes through frontal lessons Discussing about the information collected with a doctor Presentation of works in evening meetings with parents Duration: The activity is organized in two two-hour meetings for each class and in an evening meeting for the presentation of the work. Period: February-May

The work may consist in: A research, a newspaper article, a power-point presentation, a story, a poem, a drawing, a poster, statistics, a photographs, a song, a film clip, a spot, a sketch, etc. Afterwards a group of student takes part in the ”No Tobacco Day” at the Institute of Cancer Research in Milan. Matters under discussion: The cigarette as a contagious illness Nicotine Smoking as culture, addiction and illness Why people take up smoking Damages from smoking Illnesses caused by smoking Smoking and ads Passive and active smoking Smoking and the environment How to give up smoking

HEALTH AND MENTAL DISORDERS OBJECTIVES: Give information on major mental disorders Give information on the structures that deal with mental health problems in the area Improve the attitude towards mentally disordered people Prevent and overcome discrimination and prejudice Promote the acceptance and solidarity on the problem STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT Survey in class, getting to know the story of a person with mental problems, group discussion, final survey, meeting with teachers who are interested in the project, organization of football and volleyball tournaments.

Duration: November-december ( 3 meetings ) 1° meeting: presentation of the activity and survey 2°- 3° meetings: deplovement of the themes, football and volleyball matches, meetings with teachers and class representatives. ORGAN DONATION Objective: Get to know the basic elements of transplanting organization in Lombardy Get information about the activities of AIDO Think about death/organ donation for transplantation Get to know how to feel well with our body with regard to donation and blood transfusion Activities connected to road safety The classes involved in this project are: 4 commercial school and 4 high school

STRUCTURES OF THE PROJECT Planning a series of one hour meetings on the different aspects of blood and organ donation. A meeting with the firefighters of Chiavenna about the problem of road accidents. Visit to a unit of the hospital in Sondrio to go into the covered questions. After presenting the topics there is a discussion with students. The meetings in class are held by the president of AIDO in Sondrio, by the president of AVIS in Chiavenna and by a volunteer of firefighters in Chiavenna. The project lasts the whole school year and in the end it is discussed in class and verified by the health board
