Synopsis The Engineers insure that all standards and codes, assigned by the International Ship Management (ISM), are followed. Fire doors and sprinkler systems are routinely checked to make sure they function properly. Evacuation equipment is regularly inspected to ensure safety.

Overseer The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) . Governs the construction and safety of vessels at sea. Derive the international ship management code requirements used. Codes are continually updated and backed by a full time safety training on the ship and on shore .

Steps for Protection Detection Containment Evacuation Dennis Hohos

Prevention “Aluwood” is a common material used as fire protection on modern ships Made of aluminum honey comb core, with aluminum sheets and wood veneer. Fire pumps are installed along the length of the hall Sprinkler systems are installed throughout the ships rooms

Evacuation Older ships have escape pods, lowered by cranes A new escape devise being installed on ships is a slide type marine escape system A vertical shoot that drops people into a fully enclosed life raft. This shoot was designed by RFD Marin-Ark

Conclusion With the help SOLAS fewer accidents are happening New designs in materials are preventing fires Designs in evacuation routes are helping to decrease evacuation time. Dennis Hohos
