Workshops on ITV utilization and your classroom Tips for preparing the classroom Before viewing, During viewing, After viewing tips Post viewing follow up activities How to get ITV programs into your classroom Integrating programs with content areas and standards

What can you do to prepare your students for viewing?

The classroom Have students sit where they can all see and have access to writing materials and something to bear down on. Try to accommodate students with seeing and/or hearing disabilities so they can view comfortably. KEEP THE LIGHTS ON!!!!!

*Before Viewing* Prepare the program(s) prior to classroom viewing. Select segments from video that are most relevant to the lesson’s topic and specifically target lesson objectives. Prepare the classroom for viewing Provide a focus for the children for viewing.

*During Viewing* Teachers should use the “pause” button frequently! Pause tape toPause tape to: Check comprehension Highlight or underscore a point Solicit inferences from a student Ask for students to predict an outcome Have students make connections to other topics or “real world” applications Ask a student to come and point to something on the screen

Have students define a word based on contextual clues Allude to a previously-covered topic Relate what they see to something in their own lives Illuminate dramatic devices, such as foreshadowing, characterization, etc… Have students write in journals Decipher a situation or solve a problem Enhance students’ observation and memory skills Control the viewing pace and amount of information to be analyzed Provide students time to replicate what they have seen

*After Viewing* Teachers should tie the lesson objectives to the video students have just viewed. Allow students to respond to the program. Recognize the validity of divergent reactions. Help students relate the program to their own experiences and feelings.

*Post-Viewing Activities* Hands-on exploration of concepts examined in the video Student-centered projects Field trips Student or teacher designed investigations Guest speakers in the classroom Letter/writing projects Journals to record thoughts, information, and emotions
