What’s the connection?

As the development cable model (right) shows, development is a multi-faceted process At its core is economic development, but to achieve real progress social, political, environmental and personal development is also needed. Recognising the complex nature of development is why development is often measured using an index, which combines a range of data Indices are considered more accurate than single data points such as GDP per capita. Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI) Life expectancy + Literacy rate + Infant Mortality rate The Human Development Index (HDI) Life expectancy at birth + Literacy rate + Enrolment rate + GDP per capita PPP

AIM: To examine the progress made in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) poverty reduction, education and health. Terms; Poverty reduction Education Health Sustainable development goals Sanitation Annotate your notes to identify the MDGs Explain how they help development How do they link to each other?

How does World Toilet Day relate to the MDGs?

We will be focusing on POVERTY, EDUCATION, and HEALTH. We will investigate the successes of Goals 1, 2, 4, 6.

Related also to women and equality: Having to defecate openly infringes on human safety and dignity. Women and girls risk rape and abuse as they wait until night falls because they lack of access to a toilet that offers privacy. Where toilets do exist, additional inequalities present in usability. Toilets generally remain inadequate for populations with special needs, such as the disabled and elderly, and women and girls requiring facilities to manage menstrual hygiene. Without accessible toilets for these populations, they remain excluded from opportunities to attend school and gain employment.

Use the data from the info graphic to add to the google map http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/interactive/2013/sep/24/millennium-development-goals-data-interactive

Add place marks to show: 1) Examples where your MDG has improved: Education, health and poverty 2) Examples where your MDG has got worse: Education, health, poverty 3) Information about 3 indicators in China, India, Brazil, USA, Eritrea

Example of work from the UN Eritrea, East Africa Located in the southern region of the Sahel Desert therefore experiencing periodic drought Eritrea has focused on the development of its gold mines as a source of revenue and economic growth HDI: 0.381, ranked 182 of 187 countries 2/3rds of the country suffered from hunger in 2012

How have they done it? IMPROVED FOOD SECURITY due TO A NEW MICRO DAM, PART OF A $1.2 MILLION UNDP FOOD SECURITY PROJECT IN ERITREA Eritrean Ministry of Agriculture and UNDP invested US$1.2 million in two micro dams Capacity of 1million cubic meters Has led to more land being farmed Greater use of irrigation Each dam feeds 1200 households and 6000 people Female headed house holds are provide with the same amount of arable land to ensure gender parity. Children have better nutrition rates and can go to school more consistently.
