Minutes of the Meeting IoT WG GISFI #7 New Delhi, Dec 19-22, 2011 Doc No: GISFI_IoT_
This session was conducted by Mr. Arpan Pal (TCS) as the Chair. There were 6 presentations conducted in this session –Presentation by (i) Agenda of the meeting by Arpan Pal (TCS) on behalf of WG Chair, (ii) IoT Activity by Anand Prasad (NEC), (iii) IoT Architecture by Anand Prasad (NEC), (iv) GISFI IoT Architecture Comparison by Soma Bandyopadhay and Hemant Rath (TCS), (v) ETSI M2M Architecture by Mini Vasudevan (Ericsson) and (vi) IoT and Telecom Infrastructure by Niranth Amogh (Huawei). Other than these presentations, there were 2 more contributions from TCS to this meeting –Modified Architecture diagram and Intelligent Application use cases. There were discussions regarding the IPR issues related to a new architecture/contribution which comes out from the discussions of GISFI meetings. –Though, the original contributions are IPR protected by the contributing company, further discussions are required before finalizing the IPR issues of above contributions. There were suggestions by Mr. Anil Kriplani that SDO activities of GISFI should be different from the R&D activities of GISFI. Other members have agreed to this. As proposed by the WG chair and agreed by members, TCS will contribute to the IoT definition activities of ITU-T, NEC and Ericsson will contribute with new use cases on E-Health to ITU-T. It was discussed and agreed that a new link will be provided in the GISFI website where GISFI will publish TR documents, including use cases. All the use cases which are presented so far can be published after due permission from the member companies responsible for bringing the use cases to GISFI. IoT WG will freeze the approved TRs/use cases and publish: Deadline – 1 month after the 7 th GISFI meeting. IoT_MoM_Dec_2011GISFI # 07, New Delhi, Dec , 2011 Minutes of the Meeting (contd.) 3
These TRs will be utilized to finalize the Technical Specification and the Framework Document. –It was further agreed that, the TRs and the TSs should be different from each other. The framework document should include all the possible architectures discussed. As suggested by Krishna, it was agreed that there should be appropriate texts covering the thought behind any architecture proposed in the framework document. The work on the framework document should be started after finalizing the use cases for publications. –The 1 st version of the framework document should be brought for discussion in the next GISFI meeting. There was a discussion on IoT architecture derived by a use case. NEC presented an example of this (M2M architecture), and explained the need of authentication requirements for both at the application and the device level. –TCS, Ericsson, Krishna, VNL, Samsung, Huawei participated in it, and it was agreed that the authentication requirements of IoT should not be moved to Security WG of GISFI. Instead, IoT WG should define appropriate standards for this. Further discussions are required on this. As proposed by Anil and discussed and agreed by TCS, NEC, Samsung, Krishna, Ericsson and others, the IoT devices are the logical entity/devices and the scope framework architecture does not depend on any specific access technology, device characteristic and specific domain of applications. –IoT should focus on the functionalities of such devices above the Transport Layer.. The scalability issue needs also further discussion. IoT_MoM_Dec_2011GISFI # 07, New Delhi, Dec , 2011 Minutes of the Meeting (contd.) 5
As suggested by Huawei, it was discussed whether IoT will be linked only to Internet or not. Huawei stated the example applications such as video surveillance using IoT should also be considered and IoT- should not be restricted to Internet only. Further discussion is required on this. Soma and Hemant (TCS) presented a comparison of GISFI architecture with that of ETSI, TIA and 3GPP. –The interfaces of the current proposed architecture are compared. –It was decided that based on the scope of IoT, GISFI architecture can be defined, which can be similar or different from other architectures. –It has been made clear during presentation that by using the interface I2 application can directly reach to the addressable device/sensor. I2 provides the interface to the application controller to the edge access gateway. IoT_MoM_Dec_2011GISFI # 07, New Delhi, Dec , 2011 Minutes of the Meeting (contd.) 6
During the architecture comparison presentation TCS pointed out that though chaining among application middleware nodes as well as access gateways are considered no interfaces are defined for this and no use case is mapped to it yet. Chaining of application middleware may be suitable for distributed computing. TCS requested all the members like NEC, Ericsson to look into it As agreed, TCS will bring the edited/re-drawn architecture diagram in the next meeting – IoT core needs to be removed, Internet cloud should be removed, Name of different application should be removed, etc. IoT_MoM_Dec_2011GISFI # 07, New Delhi, Dec , 2011 Minutes of the Meeting (contd.) 7
Mini (Ericsson) presented ETSI M2M architecture in detail. There were discussions related to device gateway and its capabilities and the level of intelligence that should be considered for it. Niranth (Huawei) presented an informational document on the relation between IoT and Telecom infrastructure. It was decided that IoT should look into the impact of telecom infrastructure on IoT architecture. Chair requested Huawei to create a template in the framework document to capture interface features and requirements thereof. An LS has to be sent to OMA through Anil (who presented OMA activities to GISFI Meeting). IoT_MoM_Dec_2011GISFI # 07, New Delhi, Dec , 2011 Minutes of the Meeting (contd.) 8
