Presentation transcript:

Do Now 12/11/14 In spiral notebooks, write today’s date and answer the following: if you disagreed with the following statements, what would your opinion be? Example: – Winter is the best season. – Answer: Winter is the worst season. Winter is not the best season. Now, try these out… 1.Playing video games increases problem solving skills. 2.Girls are better at learning math. 3.The temperature of the globe is increasing due to global warming. 4.Watching too much TV decreases the viewer’s motivation. 5.Wearing glasses makes a person seem more intelligent.

Learning Targets/Objectives 1.Students will write an objective summary of the text “Equal Rights for Women” using their gist notes and writing skills.

Agenda 12/11/14 1.Do now 2.Objectives & agenda review 3.Analyzing text structure review 4.Concept Notes 5.Finish gist review 6.Work time: objective summary 7.Test multiple choice review 8.HW: study for quiz tomorrow!

Central Idea, claim and opposing view points Central idea = overall claim/argument/point of the speech/ overall gist [objective summary=controlling idea] – SPEECH: Laws are needed that demand equality for all people; not laws that promote special privileges for women Supporting claim = points within the text that support the central idea; reasons for the central idea 1.There is a belief that women are inferior. 2.Current laws are not working to promote equality for all. Opposing viewpoint/counterclaim = argument against the claim, think opponent/the other team – [examples see gist notes]

Gist Model Notes 1.Women are not able to get any job they want because people assume that women are different than men and as so, cannot hold the same jobs. 2.Both women and African Americans have been discriminated against, but it is getting better for African Americans and not for women. 3.Although women make up more than half of the population, they have very few leadership (managerial) jobs. 4.In the past women did not demand their rights but awareness of discrimination is rising, and a law to protect women would help change attitudes over time. 5.The Equal Rights Amendment is important because current laws aren’t working to protect women. [first opposing viewpoint to the ERA: women are already protected and don’t need a new law.] 6. [second opposing viewpoint: it would eliminate or confuse current law] Women don’t need special protection; they need equality.

Quiz Friday 12/12 = Study Guide Frayer Model: taking a stand: examples, meaning, characteristics Gist, summary statements Claims and central idea of a text -jud-, dis- (Wednesday’s class) Opposing claims, opposing viewpoint (Thursday’s class) Test Next Wednesday on similar topics
