GIS in Prevention, County Profiles, Series 4 (2007) 3. Geographic and Historical Notes Cass County is located in northern Indiana, but at the center of the southern border of the northern counties. It is bordered by Miami County to the east, Fulton to the north, Pulaski to the northwest, White County to the west, Carroll County to the south/southwest, and Howard County to the south. U.S. Highways 35 and 24 intersect in Cass County. Elevation is feet. The landscape features oak, maple, birch, beech, and hickory trees. Although the land in the south and northwest is rather level and that along Deer Creek (south) and the Wabash River (north central) is steeply sloped, most of the county has slightly sloping countryside. This county is part of the Indiana and Ohio Till Plain resource area. Cass County is in Eastern Time Zone and it observes DST. Average daily temperatures are 16 ٥ / 35 ٥ in January and 61 ٥ / 86 ٥ in July. Annual precipitation is and snowfall inches. Typically the first freeze of the season is around October and the last freeze is around May 1-5. The growing season lasts about days. Nearly nine-tenths of the land is farmland and almost all of that is used for cash crops. Main crops include corn for grain, hay and soybeans. Vegetable crops include cucumbers and tomatoes. Livestock include cattle/calves, hogs/pigs, and sheep/lambs. Popcorn is a special crop. Main natural resources include cement, clay, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone, and commercial forestland. Communities include the city of Logansport, the county seat. Towns include Galveston, Onward, Royal Center, and Walton. Townships include Adams, Bethlehem, Boone, Clay, Clinton, Deer Creek, Eel, Harrison, Jackson, Jefferson, Miami, Noble, Tipton, and Washington. 3. Hinkle took the Butler University basketball team to nationals in 1929, and it is said that it was his idea that basketballs be orange. Another native of Logansport, Greg Kinnear (1963- )gained recognition as a movie actor and TV host of various talk shows.
