Chapter 4 – Managing Yourself Stress – What is it?

Stress is…. –Eustress vs. Distress –Change in the usual mode of functioning –Hans Selye – Animal Research and the General Adaptation Syndrome –Arnold Lazarus – Daily Uplifts & Hassles –What might be stress to you might not be stress to someone else!

Stress and Personality Types –Type A and Type B personality Addiction? Workaholics

What can you do about stress? Monitoring Blunting Do I let my anger out or do I control it?

What is Burnout? Symptoms? –Chronic fatigue/low energy –Irritability/negative attitude –Inflexibility/indecisive

How to overcome burnout? List priorities. Schedule yourself to do less. Set goals that are achievable. Compartmentalize by focusing on one job at a time. Make changes in you job routine. Schedule fun. Listen to your body!!! Develop a detached concern.

Manageing time Set priorities with your time. Keep an intermittent time log. Plain daily, intermediate, and long term goals. Keep a to-do list. Plan activities. Schedule your time realistically. Improve communication skills. Make big projects manageable. Balance personal and professional life. Organize your physical space. Control interruptions and be willing to say “NO”.
