What do we know?

What is computer science? What is the name of each of these devices? What does each device do: input, output or processing?

Computer components: hardware What is this computer component called? What is the function of the CPU?

Computer components: hardware What types of storage devices can you see? Which of these storage devices is best for quick access and sharing?

Optical storage devices What types of discs can you see in this image? What type of disc has the greatest storage capacity?

Peripheral devices Do you recognise any of these ports? What are they used for? Which ports are for input, output and input/output?

Computer components: hardware Can you locate the CPU (microprocessor) on this motherboard? Where do you think the name ‘motherboard’ comes from?

Peripheral devices What is each one of these devices called? What does each of these devices do: input, output or input/output?

What does an operating system do? What elements can you see on these operating system desktops? Operating systems

Why do you think this operating system is called ‘Windows’? Can you see these buttons: close, maximise and minimise? The Windows ® operating system

What do we use Microsoft Word for? How can you use Word for your technology projects? Windows applications: Word

What is the main reason that many computer users choose Linux? Can you see any differences between the Linux and Windows interface? The Linux ® operating system

What do we use Impress for? How can you use Impress in your technology projects? Open-source applications: OpenOffice Impress

What is this device called? Can you think of any advantages it has over printed books? New developments in hardware

What have we learned? Computers Use a binary encoding system. Hardware Memories Components Hardware. Software. Central processing units RAM, ROM. Computer science The set of techniques and knowledge necessary to automatically process information with a computer. Storage devices Magnetic, optical, solid-state. Peripheral devices Input: keyboard, mouse, scanner, web camera, barcode reader, touch screen, joystick. Output: monitor, printer. Input / output: modem, PDA, mobile telephones, digital cameras.

What have we learned? Software The set of programs or instructions that start up the computer and process data so that we can use it. Operating system Examples Types Applications. Multimedia programs. Allows us to store and organise files, folders and programs on the computer, and to search for files. Windows, Linux, Mac OS. Operating systems. Office software Types The set of programs that are used to organise, store and process data and transmit information. Word processors, spreadsheets, presentation programs, database programs.
