The word on the street…What is so good about sport? Mother of two young children Junior soccer coach Aspiring young sportsman PE Teacher Grandmother

What puts people off sport? Perception - feeling like they are not skilled enough/fit enough Expense - unable to afford uniform, club fees, entry to venue, gear, trips etc Not valued in family/community - no encouragement or support to be involved Bad prior experience - shapes future involvement

BENEFITS OF SPORTS PARTICIPATION Significance to SOCIETY

SOME OTHER INFLUENCES ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORT IN SOCIETY SPARC guidelines Otago multidisciplinary study findings Green Prescription Political agendas - John Key speech

PERSONAL VIEW Significance to ME From participating in the orienteering sessions I know that organised sport benefits me in the following ways: Mentally eg challenge Physically eg health benefits Satisfaction/reward/pride Socially eg influence of friends

SPORTS AFTERNOON - THE OTHER SIDES TO THE STORY (The not so good bits) Cost - equipment, grounds, uniform Positive experience for all? Are all included? Are all motivated to participate? Organisation - personnel, staffing Time away from academic study Is it enough to achieve fitness and health goals?

CRITICAL DISCUSSION & FINAL ARGUMENTS What is the ideal? Young people who value exercise and are fit and active can be committed to something respect each other and to follow the rules can have fun in a constructive way are positive about lifelong physical activity What an amazing society that would be! What is the cost of not doing it?
