Geography Where Do We Live?

This is Earth. That’s the name of the planet where we live.

The planet Earth is made up mostly of water. Geographers organize Earth’s water surface into parts. –Geographers divide the major waters of the world into 4 major oceans: Pacific Ocean Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean Arctic Ocean –Lakes and seas are smaller bodies of water. Water Surface

Our planet’s land surface is divided up into 7 large landmasses called continents. –Africa –Antarctica –Australia –Asia –Europe –North America –South America Land Surface

So, again - this is Earth …

and these are the continents.

The Continents Are Divided Up! 5 of the continents are broken up into sections of land called countries. –Africa –Asia –Europe –North America –South America 1 of the continents is broken up into sections of land called territories. –Australia 1 of the continents has no countries or territories at all. In fact, it really has no one living there! –Antarctica

Countries of Africa

Countries of Asia: The World’s Largest Continent

Countries of Europe

Countries of North America

Countries of South America

Territories of Australia

Antarctica: The Continent Without Countries

So, again - this is Earth …

and these are the continents …

which are divided into countries and territories.

Each of these countries or territories has a capital city.

Regions – More Division of Land As you know, the continent of North America is divided up into three basic countries: –Canada –Mexico –United States of America All countries are divided up into large areas of land called regions. –Sometimes regions are actually called “regions” but usually they are called by other names such as: Provinces Territories Departments States

Canada Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories.

Mexico Mexico is divided into 31 states and 1 Federal District.

United States of America The United States of America is divided into 50 states. It also holds several other districts, territories, and possessions

So, again - this is Earth …

and these are the continents …

which are divided into countries and territories …

which are divided into regions …

which are divided into provinces, territories, departments, and/or states.

State Regions Each of these states is divided into regions … California is divided into several large regions.

Counties which are divided into smaller regions called counties …

Cities which are divided up into cities.

Neighborhoods Cities are divided up into neighborhoods by streets. On each street, you can find buildings, houses, or apartments.

So, again - this is Earth …

and these are the continents …

which are divided into countries and territories …

which are divided into regions …

which are divided into provinces, territories, departments, and/or states.

States are divided into regions …

which are divided into counties …

which are divided into cities …

which are divided into neighborhoods where we live.

So, to sum up, we go to school in Chatsworth because we probably live in houses or apartments in this neighborhood.

Chatsworth is a city in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County is one of many counties in the state of California.

Los Angeles County is located in the Southern Region of California.

California is one of 50 states in the country of the United States of America.

California is located in the Western Region of the United States of America.

The United States of America is just one of the countries found on the continent of North America.

The continent of North America is one of 7 continents on Earth.

And, again, this is Earth. That’s the name of the planet where we live.
