Obesity A power point presentation made by Charlotte.

New Zealand is one of the fattest countries in the world. The world is getting fatter. How do people get fat? People get fat when they eat too much and do little exercise. Some foods provide a lot more energy than others. These foods are high in fat and sugar. Some of these foods are: chocolate, chips, burgers, pies and sausage rolls. Some people think that their genes cause this, but for most, it’s the environment that we live in that causes this global problem. Unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food, so that is the main reason why obesity is more common in lower income households. In poor countries it’s the rich people who are obese because they can afford to buy food, but in wealthy countries like New Zealand, it’s poor people that suffer more.

Almost everywhere we go food is easily available and it’s usually high fat and sugar, e.g. the movies, amusement parks, sports grounds, shopping malls and even at school (especially at secondary school, with school tuck shops) Most food advertising on TV is for unhealthy food. Advertisers use special promotions and offers to get people to buy their unhealthy food. Unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food, for example: two litres of coke, cost half the price of two litres of milk. The environment.

 Make healthier cheaper e.g. the government could take GST off healthy food.  Our government could ban unhealthy food advertising on television especially during kids TV.  The government could require schools to provide ONLY healthy food. (Well… they tried that for a while…)  Ask our sports stars to promote healthy food, instead of unhealthy. I like the Breakers, not the Burger King Breakers!  We could all start buying healthy food, or asking for it, then the shops might stock it.  Lets get active! Different ways to prevent obesity:
