NROC Network Case Studies Offering Course Content Statewide CHALLENGE: Offer high-quality online course content statewide “The (NROC courses) were a unique find. The quality is extraordinary, the flexibility is exceptional, and the feedback we’re getting from our teachers is the content is amazing.” Steve Nelson Chief Information Technology Strategist, ODOE

NROC Network Case Studies Credit Recovery CHALLENGE: High percentage of students not passing or completing courses “The use of the new OPS-branded HippoCampus site is very exciting for us, providing an additional resource for our teachers and giving them the ability to create their own HippoCampus pages.” Rachel Wise, Ph.D. Director of Secondary Education, OPS

NROC Network Case Studies Sharing Through a Central Repository CHALLENGE: Promote content sharing and save development costs among 35 member colleges. "Starting a statewide digital repository is a challenge. At the core of the project, the repository must offer sufficient rich multimedia and high quality resources to attract and motivate faculty to use repository content. In Florida, we are licensing the high quality NROC content library to form that essential content core." Susie Henderson, Director, Orange Grove

NROC Network Case Studies Replacing Costly Textbooks CHALLENGE: Textbook prices are too high. On teaching US History without a textbook “... we turned to NROC. I left my discussion questions, midterms, and finals the same as they were when we used the textbook, so I could compare outcomes. I was happy to find that my students are right on track with the digital alternative... “ Karen Kaemmerling Chair of Social Sciences, CCCOnline

Mongabay.com: The future of online education?

The Old Face of Education

The New Face of Education

Website raising interest in wildlife and wild lands while promoting awareness of environmental issues. Primary users are K-12 teachers and students. 60,000 unique users per day. What is Mongabay.com?

Mongabay.com Website Growth

Optimizing the site through a combination of keys words, links, bookmarking, etc. Mongabay.com skyrocketed in Google ranking in early Mongabay.com How did it happen?

Content Authority In the online world, traditional measures of authority (credibility) do not drive usage. Online Educational Resources A Cautionary Tale

Online Resources are dependent on the web and search engines - Access is a direct function of the index ranking; “first-page phenomenon.” Index ranking is a direct function of the primary measures of the ranking algorithm (e.g., links, key words, etc.) The use of Online Resources is a direct function of the site optimization. Online Educational Resources A Cautionary Tale What Drives Usage?

Education is dependent on authority tied to reputation based on certification (e.g., Ph.D.) - A degree from MIT is considered more valuable than a degree from a state college. The analysis/information of a Ph.D. is more trustworthy than that of a person without a graduate degree. The analysis/information of a MIT Ph.D. is more valuable and trustworthy than a person without a graduate degree. Online Educational Resources A Cautionary Tale What Drives Usage?

Putting these two statement sets together... Online Educational Resources are dependent on the web and search engines. Search engines do not include “authority tied to reputation based on certification” as a measure for determining indexing rank. The best optimized OER sites will be the most used and influential, not those with the most academically qualified content. Online Educational Resources A Cautionary Tale What Drives Usage?
