F UNGAL S KIN D ISEASE Definition: a fungal skin disease that is caused by fungi, and leaves red and scaly patches on the skin. Also can be called tinea The disease lasts for a few days or weeks. Ringworm is a contagious infection called tinea corporis that occurs on the body. It is caused by various types of fungus, like those that cause athlete's foot. The name comes from the characteristic ring that appears on the infected person's skin. It has nothing to do with actual worms.

S YMPTOMS OF R INGWORM Flat, ring-shaped rash Itching Burning Scaling Discomfort The ringworm symptoms begin to appear as scaly and itchy and can spread anywhere on showing skin.

C AN R INGWORM SPREAD ? It is contagious (can be spread from person to person) Athletes foot is one of the most common types of ringworm that can be spread easily. If you are in a public area and you are not wearing shoes then you are more then likely to get it also if you share a hat with someone and they had a mild case of ringworm and they didn’t know they did then you wore their hat then you would get it as well.

T REATMENT OF R INGWORM Ringworm can be successfully treated with antifungal medications. It can be treated with small creams that might be held in your house and could also be prescribed by your doctor. (antibiotics) The cream would just have to be rubbed on the area that it appears at and placed on the area for a few weeks.

C URRENT R ESEARCH ON R INGWORM Research on ringworm is still happening today at certain colleges in the U.S. One of the colleges it is occurring at is the University of California at Berkeley. College students have been researching the topic and have found out that it occurs most in the feet.

W HO IS MORE LIKELY TO GET THIS DISEASE ? Everyone is immune to this disease, meaning anyone can get ringworm. Although a lot of animal seem to have the disease. Ringworm can occur in all different types of the body such as scalp, feet, armpits, chest, face, and any open area of skin.
