The Origins of Kingship and Mytho-History HIST /3/14

What is History? Clio – The Muse of History Historia – learning through inquiry American Historical Association – “the never-ending process whereby people seek to understand the past and its many meanings.” But how do we do it?

History vs. Prehistory Sources – Historians rely on written sources. Prehistory – The period before written sources. The study of prehistory relies heavily on material culture. What’s wrong with that? “Elite” Burial – Varna, Bulgaria (4,500 – 4,000BCE)

The Standard of Ur (~2600BCE) Peace side What can you say about the people who made this?

The Standard of Ur War side What can you say about the people who made this?

Problems of Written Sources Authorial bias “History is written by the victors.” Incomplete textual record – Destruction of documents – Willful and accidental Literacy and scribal traditions Truth = knowledge + power Would a scribe ever copy this bill of sale for a donkey?

Mytho-History Accounts that claim to be historical Difficulty of confirming with other sources Used to explain traditions or current conditions Homer and Mycenaean Greece Used to moralize the past George Washington and the Cherry Tree Religious traditions
