Business Subjects for the Leaving Certificate Presented by Oide Deasún

The business platform Business subjects for the Leaving Certificate are spread over the following distinctive subjects: 1.Economics 2.Business 3.Accounting Only Economics and Business are being discussed in this presentation Economics Background Approx 5,000 students take Economics each year as a completely new business subject No need to have studied Business Studies for the JC I have prepared students for the LC exam on 3 occasions and with great success I have taught this subject at third level for 3 years on a full time basis Last year I was invited by the SEC to act as Examiner for the subject for the honours LC paper through Irish Last year I acted as an SEC Appeals Examiner for Economics through Irish Why choose Economics It’s an immensely topical and rewarding subject It has a simple elegant structure to it; it is highly logical; it contains a very modest number of topics; thus it is easily covered and revised Not much maths is required for proficiency Students are rewarded for keeping abreast of current topical issues that often appear in the final exam At third level it is included in many degrees- not just Commerce or Business e.g. It is highly relevant to journalism and has links with Geography. It can be included as an elective module in many degrees The Economic’s syllabus There are two separate areas to Economics- Macro and Micro Economics Macro Economics deals with the big picture of Government policies and International Institutions: our National Income; Population and Employment; International Trade; Banking and our EU institutions; Consumers and Inflation The Economic’s syllabus Micro Economics deals with the individual firm in the market place and includes topics such as: Supply & Demand; Production- revenue, costs and profit; 4 factors of production; 4 key market structures that firms operate in; Short-term and long term survival. The exam consists of one compulsory definition question; 4 questions to be taken from 8 choices covering Macro (4) and Micro (4) topics Unbelievable choice in the exam for students! Why study Business? Over 20,000 students sit this exam each year For many students it’s a great way to get a good honour and it is often taken up by students who have not taken Business Studies for the JC Its is a core and elective subject in many third level degrees It is immensely readable and topical No maths is required to be competent The Business syllabus- just a taste! It is a wider subject than Economics, covering 7 large units with an average of 3/4 topics in each unit A flavour of the units consists of: Enterprise and People in business; Management skills and practices; 4 types of functional management; Business start-ups; Marketing; Business Industries and the Community; and International aspects to Business. Assessement of Business A compulsory Business case-study taken from a set number of units that change each year: units 3,4, 5 last year A compulsory short question section- definition type questions Four main written questions to be taken from a total of 7 questions Note: I have prepared students for honours Business LC exam on 3 separateo occasions with great success. I have lectured in Management at third level for 3 years on a full-time basis
