COURSE : EDUCATIONAL A series of lessons or lectures on a particular subject A period of study at a college SYLLABUS : a list of topics that student should study in a particular subject CURRICULUM : Subjects that are included in a program of study taught in a department or a college

INTRODUCTION: Staff should share syllabi with students Syllabi can be useful in engaging students and creating an effective classroom atmosphere Syllabi serve as a vital function in accreditation process

COMPONENTS OF SYLLABI: STRUCTURAL MOTIVATIONAL EVIDENTIARY

Components & uses of syllabi: 1-Structural : good course create an effective form for both students & staff allowing all parties to recognize where do they need to go, what they need to do Dates for seminars,papers, exams readings etc..

2-Motivational:In introducing syllabus : encounter ingrained beliefs : Students are powerless to affect what happens to them Hard work will not pay off Success is due to luck Failure is due to circumstances beyond their control Motivate students to active participation in learning process through preparation, assignments Relieve anxiety about exam, failure

3-Evidentiary : Syllabus serves as a contract between students & staff Students may be asked to sign that they read the syllabus & agree to its contents Students should receive a copy & comment on it Student feed back at the end of course will add to strengthen, revise & update according to students wills to achieve goals & objectives of the course

FUNCTIONS OF SYLLABI: - Sets the tone for a course - Motivates students to achieve goals - Serves as a planning tool for staff - Students schedule work over the semester - Serves as a tool about what students can expect from staff & vise versa

Parts of an effective syllabus: A strong syllabus is relatively detailed 1- Title of the course : 2-Identifying information of the staff : 3-Course description : importance of course Why study the subject Benefits of subject for future What skills develop 4-Course goals, objectives aims 5-Assesments : types, means to asses students

6-Gradings 7-Schedules for examinations 8-Schedule of lectures, practical sessions 9-Reading references

Rationale : principles or reasons which explain a particular decision To make a course effective tell student ; Why you find course exciting Why you give them assignments Why they are important e.g cooperative learning, group discussions they assume active learning

Conclusions : -syllabi are a paper contract between staff & students & staff -Designed to answer students questions about a course -Inform student about what will happen should they fail -Engages students as effective collaborators in the learning process
