END OF COURSE TESTING WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT Freshman Parent Information Session

WHO TAKES THE END OF COURSE TESTS? Entering 9 th grade for the first time End of Course Tests TAKS Test 2011 and Beyond 2010-past

What are the End of Course Tests or EOC’s? English I, II, III Biology, Chemistry and Physics Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II W. Geography W. History U.S. History 12 Subject Related Tests

STAAR / End of Course Graduation Requirements Students must reach at least the minimum score Each test has a minimum, passing and college readiness score PERFORMANCE NOT PASSING PASSINGCollege Readiness |||||||||||||| Minimum.

STAAR / End of Course Graduation Requirements Each subject area must have a cumulative score of passing to meet the graduation testing requirement. If the passing scale score on each of the 3 science EOC assessments happens to be set at 1000, then the cumulative score ≥ 3 x 1000 the cumulative score ≥ 3000 NOT PASSING PASSING College Readiness |||||||||| Minimum.

STAAR END OF COURSE Graduation Requirements If the minimum scale score on each of the 3 science EOC assessments happens to be 900 Then students must score at least 900 on each of the 3 science EOC assessments. However, scoring 900 on each of the 3 science EOC assessments will not meet the cumulative score requirement of NOT PASSING PASSING College Readiness |||||||||| Minimum.

If a student scores 950 on Biology 1000 on Chemistry 900 on Physics Then the student’s cumulative score is 2850 And 2850 does not meet the cumulative score requirement of 3000; therefore the student must retest for graduation testing requirements. NOT PASSING PASSING College Readiness |||||||||| Minimum.

If a student scores 1200 on Biology 900 on Chemistry 1100 on Physics 900 meets the minimum score requirement and can be used towards the cumulative score Then the student’s cumulative score is 3200 which meets the cumulative score requirement of 3000; the student will meet standard NOT PASSING PASSING College Readiness |||||||||| Minimum.

What Does this Mean for the State Graduation Plans? Minimum Recommended Distinguished English I, II, III Biology Algebra I and Geometry W. Geography W. History U.S. History English I, II, III Biology, Chemistry and Physics Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II W. Geography W. History U.S. History English I, II, III Biology, Chemistry and Physics Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II W. Geography W. History U.S. History Students who graduate distinguished must meet the Level III college readiness standard for both English III and Algebra II Below are the EOC tests that must be successfully completed for graduation.

When and How are the EOC Tests Taken? All ELA Tests will be Taken the Week of March 26-30,2012 All Other Tests will be Taken the Week of May 7-May 18, 2012 ELA will be given on two separate days Writing Day 1 Reading Day 2 Each test has a time limit of 4 hours

How Many Times May a Student Retake an EOC Test to meet the Graduation Testing Requirements? Students may take an EOC test as many times as needed to meet the testing standards. Retests will be given in the summer and fall semester of each year.

What About a Student that Took EOC Courses in the 7 th and 8 th Grade? Students that took an EOC course in the 7 th or 8 th grade will have the option to take those EOC tests at any time during their 9-12 th grades to help raise their EOC test grades to the cumulative score. If the student chooses not to take the EOC for courses taken in 7 th or 8 th grade, their cumulative score will only be based on the EOC tests taken while enrolled in high school. This only applies to students that entered the 9 th grade in the school year.

How Do the EOC Tests Affect High School Credits? The EOC test for each subject will count as 15% of the final grade for each course. Each semester will be counted as 42.5% of the grade. Credit for the course will not be awarded until the two semesters and the EOC test score average a 70.

What if My Student Doesn’t Pass his Course Because of the EOC Test? Students may retake the EOC test 2 times in order to raise their course average to a 70. After the two retakes and the student still does not meet the average of 70 in the course, the student will retake the course in an attempt to earn credit.

Stay Tuned!! More End of Course Information Will Be Available in the Future. STAAR EOC PARENT WORKSHOP OCTOBER 1, 2011 PRESENTED BY REGION X Thank you for being here this evening.
