St. Michael’s Medical Center SMMC is a 337 bed teaching and research hospital in Newark NJ Mountainside Hospital is a 300 bed hospital in Montclair NJ (15 min away) Columbus Hospital ER Call Associated with the Seton Hall School of Continued Medical Education Teaching Hospitals with Medical Residents and Fellows (No Ortho Residents) 3 year surgical program RPR leading to a PSR-24 Transitioning to PM&S-36 for current first year resident and all incoming residents 1 resident chosen each year Accept applicants from all podiatric schools
Residency Program 3 year surgical program incorporating all aspects of medical and surgical podiatry Access to podiatric and orthopedic surgical cases Podiatry gets all foot ankle and lower leg trauma No Orthopedic residents at SMMC, and very good relationship with Ortho attendings 3 days of clinic per week Two days of general podiatry clinic including podiatric medicine and biomechanics One day of wound care clinic Residents see and work up all of their Pre-Op and Post op patients Daily in-house patient care On-Call schedule for acute podiatric medicine and trauma in the Emergency Room Each resident has graduated with well over the needed forefoot, rearfoot and ankle surgical numbers
Newark, NJ Located 20 minutes from New York City in the northeastern part of New Jersey Easy access to and from Newark, from NYC and surrounding area, utilizing public transportation Urban downtown environment near NJ PAC, Prudential center (Devils) Newark Bears Stadium NJIT Rutgers Newark campus less than a block away
Education Monthly meetings are held at St. Michael’s on the last Wednesday of every month Weekly radiology rounds with attending physicians on surgical cases Weekly journal club or present courseware review amongst residents Infectious Disease Rounds weekly
Lifestyle Pay is 48,000 1st year, 50,000 2nd year, and 52,000 3rd year ER call can be taken from Home Residents get four weeks of vacation in two week intervals Residents get up to $750.00 per year in book expenses Chief Resident (3rd Year) receives up to $800 to travel and take a Educational Course
Externship Students may do a 2 or 4 week externship or visit the program at any time (4 week preferred and scheduling is flexible) Externship includes the student in all aspects of the daily routine of the residents including surgeries and clinic Externship concludes with a presentation on a topic chosen by the student Interviews are held at the Eastern CRIP
Conclusion Saint Michael’s is in all inclusive surgical and medical training experience The residency has a long history and many of the attending physicians have graduated from the program The inner-city experience allows for exposure to a diverse range of pathology SMMC is a long standing and very stable Residency Program where every graduate sat for and passed the Forefoot and Rearfoot Surgical Boards Completion of this program gives a very well rounded Foot and Ankle Education in which the graduate is very prepared to begin private practice.
