Adventurer Leadership Training 26 June 2010

Creative expression is where children find ways to personally express themselves and develop new skills Our workshop today is about providing the resources for our Adventurers to enjoy self expression and to make learning fun Of course you may find them teaching you!

Range of Adventurer Clubs Well resourced Comfortable budget Lots of space Plenty of helpers Few resources No budget Hired or minimal space Little help

Overview There are helps available for Awards but not a lot for the other sections that are part of the class requirements: My God My Self My Family My World These areas are what we are looking at today

Creativity is about Challenge Stretching their understanding of their own capabilities Empowering them to be all they can be Looking for the possibilities in objects Being open to ideas and trying them out [within reason!] Using the class requirements as a springboard not a fence NO EXIT

The two P’s - Planning & Participation Plan basics What message do we need to get across? What resources do we need? Who is going to do what? Participation basics Get everyone to contribute something Be positive about all contributions

1. STORY TELLING 2. MUSIC 3. DRAMA 4. OTHER 5. CRAFT ‘ TELL IT OVER AGAIN TO ME’

Storytelling Show pictures to illustrate the story you are reading, use voices and expressions Use first person dialog, what the person said Get the Adventurers to participate Practice the art of storytelling. Learn your story well and look at different points of view to make it more interesting. Make it fun!

Add To Your Storytelling Be careful to make stories Biblically accurate You can add details to the Bible account such as putting on armour before a battle If we know beginning and/or the end of the story, we can fill in the details Do some research, make it more real to the Adventurers by using historical facts

The key is repetition, repetition, repetition Read the verse/s directly from the Bible – talk about them- give meaning Use objects and games to focus while repeating Use finger plays and actions to remember Bible Verses Use music and tunes Be creative!

Music Write a song to a well known tune to illustrate the requirement. Make up a tune for the Bible verse Use live music, DVD’s or CD’s to teach new songs or enjoy old ones Sing a song while you march or use a drum Form an Adventurer Band

Drama & Role Plays Act out the story -provide a box of costumes, write a script Use resource books for modern skits to illustrate the point for older Adventurers Dress up and perform to a script read by a narrator Drama & role plays are about visuals, and visuals fix it in the memory

Puppets Use commercially made or homemade puppets to tell the story Children grasp issues better through visuals Get the children to tell the story or repeat the Bible verses using the puppets. Hiding behind a puppet can help a shy child to participate

Ballooning and other ideas Try string or wool web, beanbags, cue cards, puzzles, poster making etc. There are lots and lots of creative ideas Ballooning is a fun way to illustrate stories and get the children involved in creating These ideas are about creating memories that help the learning stick in the mind

Leader/Teacher Workshop Divide into groups according to Adventurer class you teach or are interested in Use the provided sheets to prompt ideas for creative ways of teaching the requirement All sheets to be collected and used to put a resource together

Conclusion & Questions Adventurer Clubs are about teaching new skills and making memories for the children Remember Be always on the lookout for new ideas Communicate with your team Collect the resources in advance Make use of those church members! Be prepared for it to run away in interesting ways Practice pulling it back on target Above all, have fun!!!
