STRESS AND YOUR HEALTH Discuss 5 different causes of stress. Describe the body’s physical response to stress. Differentiate between positive and negative stress.

WHAT CAUSES STRESS STRESS: THE BODY AND MINDS RESPONSE TO A DEMAND. STRESSOR: IS ANY SITUATIONTHAT PUTS ADEMAND ON THE BODY OR MIND. ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS: CONDITIONS OR EVENTS IN YOUR PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT THAT CAUSE YOU STRESS.IE: NOISE, CROWDING, POLLUTION, AND NATURAL DISASTERS…

WHAT CAUSES STRESS 2. BIOLOGICAL STRESSORS: Conditions that make it difficult for your body to take part in daily activities. ie: illness, injury, and disability. 3. THINKING STRESSORS: Any type of mental challenge can cause stress. ie: a health test. 4. BEHAVIOR STRESSOR: Unhealthy behavior, like not getting enough rest or exercise, can lead to stress. Also, using tobacco, alcohol, and drugs can be stressful. 5. LIFE CHANGE STRESSOR: Any major life change, negative or positive causes stress. ie; death, getting married, and other other life change event.

Physical Response to Stress Fight or Flight Response: when triggered, the body provides you energy, reflexes, strength you may need to respond to a stressor. Epinephrine is released during times of stress preparing the body to react to the stressors by: *breathing speeds up, more oxygen to the body. *heart beats faster, incresing blood flow to muscles, ect. *Muscles tense preparing for movement *pupils dialate to allow more light into your eyes for better vision *Digestions slow to direct energy to the muscles * Blood sugar level increase to provide more energy for fighting or running.

EMOTIONAL AND BEHAVIORAL RESPONSE TO STRESS The way we respond to stress depends on whether we think it is good or bad. Positive/Eustress: a stress that energizes you and helps you reach a goal. Negative/Distress: a bad stress that can make a person sick or keep them from reaching a goal. Try to make stress positive by always being optimistic and doing what you can to build self confidence.

LONG TERM STRESS CAN MAKE YOU SICK If you experience stress for long periods of time you increase your risk for stress related disease or illnesses. Tension headaches Cold and flu Asthma Migraine headache Backache Temporomandibular joint disfunction…TMJ Heart disease Stroke High blood pressure Chronic fitigue Ulcers Anxiety disorders Insomnia depression

General Adaption Syndrome Alarm Stage: body and mind become alert…fight and flight response is triggered Resistance Stage: if stressor is not resolved…body becomes more resistant, but only for a short time. If stress is resolved you go back to a normal state of awareness. Exhaustion Stage: stressor causes exhaustion, serious exhaustion. Heart may suffer and your immune system can no longer fight off illness.
