SAFETY comes first! l Always wear safety glasses with a Z87 rating. l Dress appropriately for the job – Welding - Denim Jeans, Long sleeve cotton shirt, Leather covered shoes, welding gloves, welding hood, welders cap. l Always think first and use common sense l Be aware of classmates and their location at all times l When working with heated objects, always wear gloves, especially while metal working. No running or horseplay.

Fire Safety l Flammable chemicals are stored in the yellow flammable cabinet l Oily or chemical saturated rags are stored in the metal safety container. l Using a Fire Extinguisher: “PASS” –Pull – Aim – Squeeze – Sweep

l Learn to do a job the right way; measure twice, cut once. l Observe all warning signs or tags. l Turn off machines when not in use. l Unless you have been taught to run a machine, don’t use it. l MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheets l Reference material on chemicals and what to do in case they are ingested l Located by hand washing sink

l Avoid wearing loose or baggy clothing when working around grinders or other tools. l If in doubt at any time, ASK. l 4 types of Hazards –Mechanical –Chemical –Electrical –Fire

First Aid in the Ag Science Shop l Notify the teacher immediately. l If open wound, cover it quickly. Do not let pressure off of wound l If lightly burned, run under cold water

Eye Safety

l Always wear eye protection, most important! l Make sure welding hoods have no cracks l NEVER look at an arc without looking through a filter lens l Say “cover” before striking an arc when welding l Use at least a #5 lens when using the torch and plasma arc l Use at least a #10 when arc welding. ALL welding hoods are equipped with a #10. If you need a darker one, you will need to buy it. (Conroe Welding supply on 59 near Porter)

Lifting and Moving Safety l Size up the load before beginning l Get help if necessary l Establish a base of support l Bend your knees, not your back l Get a good, firm grip l Keep the load close l Lift with your legs l Pivot, do not twist

Oxy-acetylene Safety l When working with a lighted torch, always wear dark goggles to protect your eyes from sparks and intense light, minimum of 5. l Wear heat-resistant, nonflammable gloves. l Keep area and clothes free from grease or oil. l Avoid loose clothing, Pants with cuffs, and pockets make sure 100% cotton. l Never use petroleum products on cylinder threads. l Cylinders can never be welded on.

l Some metals require you to wear a respirator: galvanized iron, lead, zinc, beryllium, cadmium l Report defective material or tools to instructor l Never use a tool with a frayed cord l Welding and cutting should be done in well ventilated areas l Use soap and water to check for gas leaks (leak detection fluid) l Use appropriate solution for cleaning up spills/ materials l Make sure all guards are in place before using a tool.

Cylinder Care l Store or place cylinders in safe places with secure chains around them. l Keep sparks and flames away l Always store tanks with safety caps and upright position. l When “cracking the cylinder valve” do not stand in front of the regulator or gauges. l When in use, open oxygen cylinder all the way.

l When in use, open acetylene cylinder one- quarter of a turn. l Do not use cylinders without proper pressure regulators. l Do not use undue force in trying to open or close a cylinder valve.

Hose Care l Oxygen hoses are green, acetylene hoses are red, same goes for cylinders (in most cases) l Oxygen hose fittings have right-hand threads l Acetylene fittings have left-hand threads l Never use damaged hoses, they cannot be spliced or taped. l Do not allow hoses to come in contact with hot metal or where sparks could accumulate

Torch Care and Lighting l Never use a match to light torch. l Do not light your torch from another person’s flame. l Always use correct pressures. l Be careful when handling a lit torch. Know where other people are and where combustibles are. l Long stock of metal need to be supported, and blade guides should be as close as possible to stock l Keep combustible materials stored in a Flammable Cabinet, not near a torch.

General Safety l Accidents are a major cause of injury. l A neutral flame is used for cutting l If electrode sticks, do not raise hood and look. l Grinding wheels should not exceed maximum RPM on the grinder. l The 3 types of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) are Eyes, Ears, Clothing Using a drill: –the larger the drill bit, the slower the speed –Speed is not the same for all work –Drill bits cut in a clockwise direction –Never lock the switch in the “on” position

General Wood Working Tool Safety l Always unplug a tool when working on (i.e. replacing blades, wheels, etc.) or adjusting the tool l Hacksaws make precision cuts l Dull blades on saws are dangerous and need to be replaced l Use both hands while operating a circular saw l All machines should reach full speed before being used l Lumber with nails and loose knots need to be thrown away
