Instructional Videos/Blended Learning Rida Ellis Instructional Coach July 15-17, 2014

Learning Targets Today we will learn about instructional videos and blended learning models So that we can best utilize instructional videos in our classrooms We will know we’ve got it when we can successfully meet the needs of our school-wide expectation of Blended Learning in our classrooms. This will be a continuous process!

What is an instructional video? According to an instructional video is a recording of someone teaching other people how to do something. An instructional video’s main goal is to educate. article

What makes an instructional video “good”? Video #1: Video #2: numbers-operations-base-ten/A/1/whole-numbers-place-valuehttp:// numbers-operations-base-ten/A/1/whole-numbers-place-value Video #3: characters-personality-using-details-from-the-texthttps://learnzillion.com/lessons/1975-describe-a- characters-personality-using-details-from-the-text Video #4: gcfhttp://mathtrain.tv/videos/230/ladder-method-for-lcm-and- gcf

Things to consider when using instructional videos… Who? Teacher created Student Created Created by an “outsider” When? What time of the day is best for your students? Small Group, Whole Group, Morning Work? What? Subject area? What videos will work best for what? Why? Why are students watching the video? What purpose does the video serve? (re-teach, first exposure, practice, multiple strategies) Where & How? computers iPads Promethean Board QR codes iTunesU Edmodo, TodaysMeet, Padlet

Time to Check Out Resources! Link is on my Durfee Resources Page

Blended Learning

What is Blended Learning? what-exactly-is-blended- learning/

What Blended Learning Isn’t… Simply adding online computer games or videos to a student’s day or homework time doesn’t count as blended learning. Neither does rolling a laptop cart into a school. Nor does it mean that students are isolated at their keyboards with no social interaction. In great blended learning schools, technology and teaching inform each other. Students alternate regularly between engaging with teachers and peers and focusing on online content tailored to their learning pace and progress.

Drivers of Blended Learning

Blended Learning Models

Videos of Models aGB3pjC7r4&list=PLTtZUJqLYbCnu6lb6 UC_rl34F4LrZR6QG&index=3

What is iTunes U? iTunes U courses give each class a completely customized learning experience that’s easy for teachers to manage. iTunes U Course Manager is a web-based tool that lets you build a course just the way you want — by bringing together your most successful teaching materials all in one place with the iTunes U app that comes on every iOS device. (

Sample iTunesU course Keep Calm…5 th Grade Rocks! 5 Week Place Value Unit This iTunesU course included: Teacher created videos YouTube/Explain Everything videos found on internet (YouTube was blocked at time so they were dropped into ProTuber and uploaded via DropBox) Check in points with teachers Pre and post assessments (Google Forms) Specific Instructions Learning Targets/Goals Skill Based Games (recorded scores) Math Fact Fluency Math Notebook Partner Activities Group Activities Mini-Lessons

What the teacher must provide… Explicit modeling How to watch instructional videos; Power of the PAUSE button How to take notes What to do when a student is finished What to do if a student is “stuck” What if the technology fails Rituals and Routines This may be a drastic change in what students are used to Good Planning/Backwards Design iTunesU is an empty structure that is built by the teacher There is no content until you add it in Opportunity for Reflection

Things to think about…. What if my students can’t read all of the directions? What if my students don’t get through what they need to? What if my students finish everything? What are you going to be doing?

Thoughts?
