How to Test Students in KeyTrain A fun, interactive guide for new administrators and proctors.

Welcome! Before you begin, you must enter the KeyTrain website. Go to You must first have an account before you can continue. If you have one, you will see the above screen and you will be able to enter by clicking on “Enter Here >>” located on the left side of the screen.

Now, click on the “RUN KeyTrain ONLINE” link. You will be prompted to type your username and password on the next screen, so make sure you know the information! Otherwise, contact your institution’s administrator.

Type your username in the first box and your password in the second box. Then, click the “Login” button. These are not case sensitive, but it is always best to treat this information like it is, so type in the username and password exactly as they appear.

If you logged in successfully, this screen will appear: *** The next screen shows how to create accounts for students and assign lessons.

Click on “Student Accounts” to add a new student. The next screen will show you how to create the student’s account. You will choose the username and password after filling in the student’s name. No two usernames can be the same.

Type the student’s name in the top fields. Each box (minus the optional middle name box and the “Group” section) must be filled in. Usernames for Tunxis begin with “TCC-” and are followed with the first initial of the student’s first name followed by the last name. The password is “Tunxis1” for all students. Click “Submit.”

Once the account has been created, add the student to a class that has been assigned specific lessons (such as the pretest for entrance to the program). Click on “Add this student to a class” and choose from the list that appears. If you do not want to add the student to a class, you can create another student or just assign lessons by clicking on the necessary link.

To add a student to a class that has been created, click on the green cross on the left. To remove a student for a class s/he is in, click on the red dash (not pictured). You will then return to the previous screen. You can create another student or continue working.

Test Day! Make sure you have the following: List of students coming Print outs of “How to Log on” for students (see left) Pencils, scrap paper

What do I need to do to prepare for the test? Go to the computer lab (CL. 4) and ask for the first 2 rows of computers to be logged on minutes before the test begins. Once the students have arrived and chosen a computer that has been logged on, hand out the log-in sheet (previous slide) with the scrap paper and pencil. Go over the sheet with them as a group.

What do I say? Offer assistance if needed to log on. Let the students know the pretest is broken down into two parts (or three for some programs). Let them know the start button is located on the left side of the screen. Once they finish one test, they should write their score on the handout and can continue to the next section by clicking on “Return to My Assignments” and then clicking on “Math” and/or “Locating Info.”

Continued… Once you have clicked on “My Assignments” and clicked “Start,” a new window will pop up. Click on “Begin your Assignment” and then “OK.” Use the navigation buttons on the bottom.

Things to warn students about: Do NOT try to install any programs or software. It is noted on the handout. Make sure students read everything. Writing may be small on some questions. A blue “Enlarge” button may appear on the upper right. Students can click on this to read questions easier. To close this view, they must use the “Close” button that replaces the “Enlarge” button. NEVER click on the red “X” on the left. It will exit the student from the test WITHOUT saving. The test will need to be restarted from the beginning. If they do not meet the goal, they can retake the test once more by clicking on “Retake” that replaces “Start.”
