LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Identifying Lab Equipment
Lab Equipment. Beaker: 1B Reaction vessel: wide opening allows for stirring.
Lab Equipment Identification. 1. Goggles Use Protecting your eyes.
Test Tube  Used to hold dry or liquid substances. To compare experimental results.
LABORATORY and SAFETY EQUIPMENT AND THEIR FUNCTIONS
Lab Equipment.
Lab Equipment. THERMOMETER An instrument used to measure temperature. DEFINITION: What is this?
SCIENCE LAB EQUIPMENT. Beaker Wide Mouthed Transport Storage Heating Not very accurate for measuring.
 Used to measure the mass of an object.  Used for mixing, holding, and estimating liquid volume.

Equipment. Erlenmeyer Flask Used to storing and pouring liquids, great for swirling or stiring Used to storing and pouring liquids, great for swirling.
Lab Equipment.
Goggles Use: –Protect eyes during lab experiments –Must be worn if any chemicals or glassware are used.
LAB EQUIPMENT. Beaker used for storing and mixing liquids.
Why do we have them? When we measure things, we want to measure to the place we are sure of and guess one more space.
Safety and Equipment Review
Petri Dish Used to grow cultures of bacteria or fungi.
Lab Equipment Label each piece of equipment with its name and write the description under the tab. This is Entry #8 in your notebook.

The most important lab safety rule is... Follow All Oral and Written Directions Given by the Teacher.
 Most common for holding liquids  Hold solids or liquids that are unlikely to release gas or splatter if stirred or heated.  Beakers come in several.
You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. To ensure a safe science classroom,
DO NOW Find your seat, and begin work on the Do Now DO NOW: Come up to the front and take a look at the lab equipment. Tell me what the name of the lab.

Presentation transcript:

 Used to hold test tubes

 Worn during a lab to protect eyes.

 The funnel can be used to target liquids into any container so they will not be lost or spilled.

 The function of a test tube is to hold a small amount of liquid during an experiment.  The test tube is made of specialized glass so it can be heated and cooled without breaking.  This same type of glass makes the test tube brittle and it must be handled carefully.

 Used to measure length or linear measurements.

 The Erlenmeyer Flask is used to heat and store liquids.  The advantage to the Erlenmeyer Flask is that the bottom is wider than the top so it will heat quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to the heat.

 The function of a balance is to mass objects.

 Both of these devices are for measuring length or linear measurements.

 Used to make accurate measurements of liquid volumes.

 The pipet is used for moving small amounts of liquid from place to place.  They are usually made of plastic and are disposable

 The thermometer is used to take temperature of solids, liquids, and gases. They are usually in o C, but can also be in o F

 Worn to protect clothing during a lab

 Used to hold and heat liquids.  Multipurpose and essential in the lab.
