Accessing the Collection From this page, you can login and also view this information in multiple languages. This is the overall OARE homepage where you can log-in or register or browse for journal titles and Abstracts. Note that even no-registered institutions can view Journal titles and abstracts but access to full-text and downloading requires registration and logging in. From the initial page’s menu, you can find the link to journals and databases, information about OARE plus eligibility, how to register, training material, etc.

Logging In For full-text journal articles: Users’ institutions must be registered Users must log in using institutional user name and password. NOTE: OARE log in does not give access to all services offered on publishers’ websites. Publishers use their discretion when it comes to the kinds of services they want to make available through OARE. It is not uncommon to have a journal listed on the OARE page but find its contents inaccessible on the publishers’ website. Publishers as commercial businesses often will adjust their services depending on the fluctuations of market share in a country. Institutions from Group B countries often have more publishers’ exclusions than Group A participants.

Passwords being case-sensitive which means you will have to type them in upper or lower-case otherwise you will not be able to login. If you use Internet Explorer, you will need to login twice.

Besides access to journals and books, the initial OARE page includes links to Summon, Search inside OARE full-text through database and article searching, Reference sources and Free Collections. Note also the link to the Training Materials. The Logged in from: … message confirms that you have completed the login. You also can confirm login by viewing the url (web address) at the top of the page that will read: oareloginresearch4life.org…

The OARE website can also be opened in French, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese. If you do not properly login, this message on the Contents page will remind you!

Once you have logged-in, you will be taken to the Contents page. The various access options will be discussed in the following slides. Once you have logged-in, you will be taken to the Contents page.

Searching by Title If you have a citation for an article from a specific journal issue, you first need to locate the journal title by clicking on the appropriate letter from the Journals collection A-Z list. Then you would be able to access the journal and eventually locate the full-text article in the specific volume and issue. Journals can be accessed by title from the Journals collection A- Z list. For example, to find Advances in Environmental Chemistry, click on A.

If you click on All Items, a new list appears that notes all the journals under P. If your institution is not eligible for all the journal titles, there will be a white ! in the box before the title. In this case, we have displayed a Group A country with no exceptions. A page appears containing all the journal titles beginning with A listing the Accessible Content for your institution. Scroll down this list.

Click on a journal title (in this case Perspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics) to be taken to its page on the publisher’s website. Click on a title in the list to select a journal Advances in Environmental Chemistry. Note the issues that are available.

Another window will open at the journal publisher’s site with the full list of Volumes, issues and articles. If you have a citation for an article from the Perspectives in Plant Ecology, Evolution and Systematics, you would open the specific volume and issue. Then you would be able to view, print or save the article.

Now displayed is the citation and abstract of the article with links to the PDF and HTML versions. Ensure that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader – to read the PDF format. If not, download a free copy from www.adobe.com

This is the PDF display of the article. Note that you need Adobe Reader.

We have displayed the P All Items list for an institution that does not have access to all the journals – noted by all the white ! boxes. Group B or Group A major exclusions institutions could have a list like this.

Click on this link to View complete list of the journals. Another option is to use the View complete list of journals that will display all titles (with links) available via OARE. This would take more time to load than the list from one alphabetical letter. Click on this link to View complete list of the journals.

This listing does not have hypertext links to the contents of the journals. You must go to the Journals collection A-Z list.

Searching by Subject Journals also can be found via the Subjects A- Z category list. If you are not looking for specific citations or if you want to browse through the journals available to you in OARE on certain subjects, choose the Subject feature. This is a good way to familiarize yourself with the pertinent journals available to you in new subjects or to browse periodically through known journals in your subject area for the latest articles.

Choose the subject that you are interested in. e. g Choose the subject that you are interested in. e.g. Environmental Law, Policy & Planning.

Similarly to the Journals collection, this subject listing has two tabs. These are the default Accessible Content (in this case a Group A country with no exceptions) and the All Items tab that would list all titles including any ‘exclusions’ for your institution. An alphabetical list of Environmental Law, Policy & Planning journals now is displayed with links to the journals’ websites.

Click on a journal title to open the journal in a new window (the publisher’s page) – Environmental Communication You will leave the OARE gateway and go to the publisher’s portal – in this case, to view the issues of Environment and Urbanization.

Again, we have opened the HTML version of an article.

Searching by Language Click on the link to the Language category list – to view the drop down menu of journals by language; choose the language you prefer. e.g. French.

A new window will open at the publisher’s site - with access to the current and previous volumes and issues. Note – the articles of this French journal may be in various languages.

Searching by Publisher From the initial Journals page, click on the drop down menu for Publishers and choose the publisher that you want. Note the list of journals that You have full access to:

If you know the publisher of the journal in a citation or if you want to see what journals are available from a certain publisher, choose the Publisher feature. This option is especially useful if you have retrieved a citation from a general search on a publisher’s website or a bibliographic database but are not sure that you have access to the full-text article. Click on the drop down menu for Publishers and choose the publisher that you want. e.g. Nature Publishing Group.

The Accessible Content list of OARE journals available from the Nature Publishing Group is displayed. Choose the specific journal that you want. e.g. Nature Cell Biology

This is the display for the HTML version of the article that includes hypertext links. You have the option of printing or downloading/saving the full text article in HTML.

This full text article is in HTML and must be read with a web-browser. Note the hyperlinks within the text of this article. As mentioned in the slide… once you save the article, you will need to view/open the file with your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox). OR you can choose to download/view in PDF. Now displayed is the PDF version of the article. To print or save click here. Again, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the PDF file. If not, download a free copy from www.adobe.com OR you can choose to download/view in PDF.

The Browse Publisher list also lists what You do not have full access to: This lists the publishers who have not granted access to your institution.

Note the white box with the exclamation point. This notes that the journal titles are excluded.

Searching for Books From the initial Contents page, you can open the Books Collection A-Z list. For example, to find Ocean Basins, click on O. The e-books used to be at the top of each alphabet letter in the Journals Collection list. As of November 2011, these titles were moved to a separate Books Collection listing. The access is similar to that in other lists and drop down menus – e.g. Journal collection, Subjects, Languages, etc. Note also the View complete list of books listing. This listing does not have hypertext links to the full-text books.

Additional Resources Additional useful resources can be opened from the two links and one drop down menu. Also note the link the Summon search tool.

The Browse databases page includes access to Scopus, Environmental Issues & Policy Index indexes. These three search tools will be discussed in subsequent modules.

The Browse reference sources page contains access to a number of useful reference tools. Open the resources that are of interest to you.

The Free collections drop down menu has links to numerous sources of free e-journal sources and also e-books..

` Now open is the Free Access to Developing Economies list of HighWire Press with direct access to the titles and articles. Access to HighWire’s Free Access to Developing Economies journals is based on IP address. If your country is eligible (and it parallels that of the R4L programs), all computers within the country will have access. There is no username or password.

HighWire Press 4 Also available from HighWire Press is list of Free Online Full-text Articles that includes free journals and ones with that have free articles after a set period of time. Some publishers allow free access to their journal issues after 6, 12 or 24 months. This slide lists some of the HIghWire Press publications that are available after these different periods of time.

Another useful Free Collections is the Directory of Open Access Journals. The Directory of Open Access Journals includes a keyword search option. It has access to journals in many disciplines.

The pesticides and water pollution search found 76 articles. Using this keyword search option, you may choose to complete searches of interest to you.

Databases & Search Tools Summon Searching – see Module 4 Scopus (Elsevier) – See Module 5A Environmental Issues and Policy Index (EBSCO) – see Module 5B In the following modules, we will view the key features of four databases – two general search tools (Summon and Scopus) and one environment specific search tools (Environmental Issues and Policy Index). These resources allow you to complete subject/keyword searches for journal articles and other resources. Much of this material is available via OARE but, in some cases, you are linked to resources (e.g. conference papers) that are available on the Internet. All of the databases have similar features – the ability to complete basic and advanced searches, further ‘limit’ searches, access full-text articles and print, save and email the citations.
