“from” Aachen
Van Auken is a Dutch name. Van means “from.” Auken is from the city of Aachen, currently in Germany near the Netherlands Border. Aachen was the headquarters of Charlemagne (800–814), King of the Franks (France, Germany, Italy). My ancestors emigrated from Aachen to the U.S. in the 18 th century.

Juarez, Mexico is named after Benito Juarez (1806 –1872), a Zapotec Ameridian who served five terms as president of Mexico. Juarez was the first full-blooded indigenous Indian to serve as President of Mexico and to lead a country in the Western Hemisphere in over 300 years. He ended the French occupation of Mexico in He was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln. Juarez is regarded by many as Mexico's greatest and most beloved leader.

Worked for Chalres Stenicka, one of my teachers at UTEP, as a “gopher” in his teamwork consulting business. Client companies I worked with included Tony Lama Boots, Coors El Paso beer distributorship, Farah manufacturing, & the Popular Department Store.

While attending UTEP, I also worked with Skip Skoggins, an El Paso lawyer & member of the Texas Legislature writing a newsletter for the El Paso Employers Association.

In conjunction with consultant Charles Stenicka, I led supervisory training seminars for El Paso’s Popular Department Store--my first formal teaching experience.
TTU Systems Analyst
Worked part-time for Monty Davenport, Executive Vice President for Texas Tech, organizing & writing a comprehensive systems & procedures manual documenting all TTU administrative logistical activities. All Tech offices received a copy of the manual to promote decentralized administration across campus.

Out dancing with my wife Carolyn. We have 3 children & 3 grandchildren.
My favorite leisure interests include collecting recorded music (especially classic American jazz), reading biographies, art appreciation, theology/philosophy, & ballroom dancing.
