Stalkers on College Campus  “Stalking 'definitely a problem' for women at college”  “Sexual Assault, Stalking Widespread on Campuses”

Stalkers are a “Potentially Deadly Threat”  CBS NEWS:  “Stalkers: Hidden Campus Danger”  Rachel Pendray  20-year-old nursing student and cheerleader at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  Murdered 12/2007 by her stalker

College Employee Murdered  “Months of stalking end with 2 dead at UW”  Rebecca Griego  College of Architecture and Urban Planning Coordinator at University of Washington  Murdered 03/2007 by her stalker

UW Chief of Police stated:  “… he did not expect to see changes in campus security procedures after the shooting. ‘It's a public building. Virginia Tech Shooting Leaves 33 Dead  April, 2007  “the gunman [Cho Seung- Hui] had been looking for his girlfriend” stated one student  Cho’s English Professor stated, “Cho, an English major, never wrote about guns or killing people, she said. But his writing was disturbing enough that she went to police and other university officials to seek help.”

How Safe Are Our Students?  13% of female college students have been victims of stalking.  Stalking is more prevalent among younger women.  College campuses provide an ideal environment for stalkers.  College campuses are relatively closed-in communities, where daily routines and regular behaviors can be easily monitored.

Who Are the Stalkers?  42.5 % are boyfriends or ex-boyfriends.  24.5% are classmates.  10.3% are acquaintances.  9.3% are friends.  5.6% are co-workers.

Victim Impact  3 in 10 women reported emotional or psychological injury.  In 15.3% of incidents, victims reported that the stalker threatened or attempted to harm them.  In 10.3% of incidents, victims reported that the stalker "forced or attempted sexual contact."  Fisher, Cullen & Turner, 2000: "Sexual Victimization of College Women") Bureau of Justice Statistics Report
