REWIN - Improving resource efficiency for the production and recycling of electronic products by adoption of waste tracking system Presented by: Benjamin Steuer, MA Prepared by Dr. Stefan Salhofer Benjamin Steuer, MA BOKU University Vienna

2 REWIN Introduction Primary resources Large generators production waste Secondary materials Informal collection formal collection Electronics production industry Recycling facilities WEEE Households WEEE

Linking supply and demand of secondary raw materials in electronic production and recycling (chain approach). The development of an adequate recycling infrastructure for WEEE as post-consumer waste and secondary raw materials from electronic producing industry. The development of a knowledge structure on Design for Recycling between the recyclers and the electronic producing industry 3 REWIN targets

11 Rewin tasks (3) researchtrainingimplementation WEEE collection Analysis of existing (formal and informal) collection schemes in PRC Identify best practice (in EU) - Technical standards for WEEE collection in CN WEEE recycling State-of-the art in WEEE recycling in EU To develop adopted recycling standards in PRC - Technical standards for WEEE recycling in CN Policy dialogue and dissemination - -Stakeholder dialogue Policy framework

12 State of the art in WEEE recycling

Rewin outcomes (1) Developing a system structure for a chain approach of EEE including collection, recycling, production, system enforcement, supervision and monitoring and applying tasks and responsibilities to different organisations and stakeholders implementation of an online Waste Tracking System ( e-WTS ) training toolkits on e-WTS guidelines for registering and using the e-WTS system for producers, recyclers and authorities.

Rewin outcomes (2) Case studies and manual for material flow analysis for electronic producers and recyclers Training toolkits Design for Recycling Action plans developed by the selected SMEs of the electronics industry Secondary Materials Exchange Platform ( SMEP ) to link supply and demand of secondary raw materials.

Rewin outcomes (3) Adapted standard for collection and recycling of WEEE Best practice examples for the use of secondary materials and Design for Recycling. Setting up a policy framework for the promotion of resource efficiency and sustainable production Build up a network for stakeholders in order to use the e-WTS and SMEP for improving resource efficiency in production of electronic products and recycling of WEEE.
