W HY S HOULD W E S AVE E LECTRICITY The power company supplies electricity to our home for a fee. The more we use that means the more we have to pay. ……Hence, we should use it wisely

H OW M UST D OES E LECTRICITY C OST ? Electricity is measured in units called Kilowatt Hours (KWH). All Electricity used has to be paid for. The hours of usage are tallied and charges are made according to the cost per kilowatt.

T ECHNIQUES U SED T O S AVE E LECTRICITY There are several ways in which we can save electricity around our homes.

C AN YOU THINK OF ANY ?

I NCANDESCENT V S F LUORESCENT B ULBS B ULBS

F LUORESCENT B ULBS A Fluorescent bulb of 15 watts gives about the same light as a incandescent bulb of 60 watts.

I NCANDESCENT B ULBS These light bulbs dissipate more heat than a fluorescent bulb and give less light.

S OLUTION Where possible incandescent bulbs replaced with fluorescent tubes.

E FFICIENT E NERGY U SAGE It is good practice not to leave electric devices powered on after you have finished using them.

M ACHINE D RYING OR S UN D RYING Try to use your electric clothes drier only at times when it is necessary. e.g, on a rainy day.

The electric drier uses electricity...…. It is therefore cheaper to sun dry your clothes where possible.

R EFRIGERATOR M ANAGEMENT Don’t store hot foods in the refrigerator. Don’t position the refrigerator next to any heating appliances e.g, stove. Don’t position the refrigerator in the path of direct sunlight.

These situations make the refrigerator work harder than usual, therefore more electricity is used.

C ONCLUSION Saving electricity means saving money. Electricity should be properly utilized within the household.
