PDO-CSM Sep Road Safety Despite all our efforts road traffic accidents remain as the biggest killer in PDO Operations. What are we doing about it ?

PDO-CSM Sep Road Safety: Key Areas of Focus n People: n People: DDC, certification, age limit, awareness n Vehicle: n Vehicle: RAS, Improved Specs (Air- bags, ABS, etc) n Roads: n Roads: On-line monitoring of “high risk” areas n Procedures: n Procedures: Safe Journey Management

PDO-CSM Sep Road Safety - People n Competence - Defensive Driving Courses and Annual Assessment n Experience - Minimum Driver Age

PDO-CSM Sep Road Safety - People Experience - Minimum Drivers’ Age PDO Drivers are required to be a minimum of 21 years of age The driver of this vehicle was only 18 years of age when it rolled over and killed a passenger. He had held a PDO driving permit for only two days before the accident occurred.

PDO-CSM Sep Road Safety - Vehicles Roadworthiness Assurance Standard (RAS) - All vehicles in PDO operations must be RAS- certified !!!

PDO-CSM Sep Vehicle Specifications All light vehicles used in PDO Operations that are new after 1/Sept/2001 must be fitted with Anti-Lock Brakes and Dual Front Air Bags

PDO-CSM Sep Seatbelts This mark was made by a passenger’s head. He was not wearing his seat belt. The vehicle was travelling at slow speed in a car park.

PDO-CSM Sep Procedures - Safe Journey Management A system for planning, authorising and closing out journeys To reduce the risk of accidents and enable emergency response (man lost) What ? Why ? When ? All journeys except journeys within towns, within 20km of a work site etc How ? Safe Journey Manager completes Journey Plan, gives copy to driver Driver rings SJM on reaching destination

PDO-CSM Sep Safe Journey Management 1. Authorise (the journey) 2. Plan 3. Monitor 4. Close Out
