101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala Overview Acclerator Physics activities at IFA-HEP CLIC: Two-Beam Test Stand  FP6-EuroTeV, FP7-EuCARD and Norduclic XFEL: Optical Replica and Laser Heater ESS: RF distribution system and test stand TIARA-PP Center for Accelerator and Instrumentation Scope and Agenda Projects

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala CLIC related Activities Long UU history in beam instrumentation in CLIC 2004 call by CERN DG for participation in CTF3 Successful application to VR+KAW for the design and construction of the TBTS Spawned FP6-EuroTeV participation and later FP7-EuCARD Coordinated approach within Scandinavian groups involved in CLIC/CTF3 led to formation of the NorduCLIC consortium

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala Two-beam Test-stand in CTF3 CTF3 drive-beam Experimental area Spectrometers and beam dumps CALIFES probe-beam Construction supported by the Swedish Research Council and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation TBTS crew: Tord Ekelöf Roger Ruber Volker Ziemann Andrea Palaia Tomoko Muranaka Tobias Blom Marek Jacewicz

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala TBTS, the real thing Beams in both beam lines, PETS and ACS installed and two-beam acceleration observed in summer 2010 Pics from R. Ruber and A. Palaia

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala Beam-instrumentation and Post-collision beam line Long involvement in beam instrumentation Bunch combination monitor (A. Ferrari, A. Rydberg) Confocal resonator monitor (FP6, AF + AR + VZ) FP6-EuroTeV project on the conceptual design of the multi-TeV post-collision line (A. Ferrari, VZ) Safely dispose 14 MW beam power when in collision (large energy spread) or not (small beam on dump)

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala FP7-EuCARD: TBTS Upgrade and breakdown experiments inside SEM Length of CLIC Achievable acc. gradient Surface fields > 200 MV/m Discharges Look at it where it happens in-situ in a scanning electron microscope Complement molecular dynamics simulation done in Helsinki (also FP7- EuCARD) GBC=TE

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala NorduCLIC Joint venture of Scandinavian groups working on CLIC/CTF3 Helsinki (F), Oslo (N), Uppsala (S), Aarhus (D) Original research program: Design (N), build (F) and test (S) acceleration structures for the new 12 GHz stand-alone test-stand at CERN Successful applications in F and S Recent expansion through accession of D Probably machine-detector interface Steinar Stapnes will be new head of CLIC

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala XFEL related activities Following the withdrawal of funding for CELSIUS and CRYRING the university heads of UU+SU+KTH sponsored the creation of a joint center for research in Free-electron laser related issues (2005, 3x3x1.5 MSeK) Three projects following workshop in Kista (Nov 2004) Precision fiducialization for special magnets Surface physics in small beam pipes (short bunches and resistive wakes) Optical Replica Synthesizer to measure ultra-short electron bunches in FLASH Spin-off: XFEL laser heater as Swedish in-kind contri- bution to the constrution of the EuXFEL

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala Optical Replica Synthesizer Problem: measure ultra-short bunches in the 10s of fs range: EOS, TEO, LOLA, ORS too fast for electronics (10 Gs/s, 100 ps) but laser folks know (autocorrelation, FROG) Solution: make an optical copy of the electron bunch and analyze that with laser methods.

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala OTR on camera while 200 fs laserpulse passes through electron bunch

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala...finally: Single-shot FROGs ORS is rebuilt into the SFLASH beam line G. Angelova received fo-ass to work on electron- laser interaction New postdoc from UniDo Show goes on Need to make it into standard operation device

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala XFEL Laser Heater Electrons are born very cold (3 keV) susceptible to plasma oscillation instabilities Add Landau damping (decoherence) in a well controlled way Laser Heater Swedish in-kind contribution Just hiring...

101115V. Ziemann: CAI at SFAIR meeting in Uppsala CAI, the startup phase In 2007 CAI was established (B. Hjörvarsson, chair and T. Ekelöf co-chair, VZ, director) In the KOF07 evaluation the need for the functionality of CAI was clearly identified......and resulted in the funding of positions for two mechanical engineers (CAD design) from the rektor's strategic funds Close relation to the Ångström workshop. We work on a wide portfolio of projects, both in- house and externally.
