Where does the TRASH go?

LANDFILLS

Everyone want their trash GONE.Most people dont want it in their city or town. How do you think the people of Turkey feel about all our trash being dumped in their back yard?

INCINERATORS

Not as bad as they used to be After stricter regulations, all of the incinerators in Turkey put out less toxins per year. Ash turns trash into a non-toxic, compact substance that can be put into landfills easier Still questions about how safe ash is, especially the finer ash, which may cause cancer Steam produced can sometimes be converted into energy Still uses a LOT of energy Emits greenhouse gasses.

Landfills vs. Incinerators What do YOU think? Where does the trash go in the world?

THE NATURE..

Great Pacific Trash Patch Ocean currents collect floating garbage for thousand of miles and drop it into the North Pacific. Eventually the trash is packed into a zone and links the trash of west and east.

It takes ; Aluminum Can years Glass- 1-2 million years Plastic Bottles- 450 years

HOW CAN WE HELP?

3 R CONCEPTS; REDUCE :Stop ussage of unnecesarry and use the nessesary.FOR EX:USE GLASS BOTTLES VS PLASTIC BOTTLES. REUSE:Use something again rathen than throwing them.SUCH AS :MAKING A TIN INTO A PENCILCASE RECYCLE:Processing used materials and break them down.So they can be used to make new materials.

What are recycled in Turkey? PAPER &CARDBOARD: magazines, newspapper, office paper, juice cartons,paperboards.. METALS :aliminium cans, aliminum foils and bakeware, steel and tin cans. GLASS:clear glass, brown(amber) glass, green, wine water glasses. PLASTICS: make sure they are green and look at the codes. WASTE ELECTRONIC DEVICES BATTERIES USED OIL OLD SHIPS AND VEHICLES

GLASS BROKEN and MELT DOWN Up to 70% of glass can be made from recycled glass in Turkey. In our school we throw glasses İnto specıal containers rather than put them trash bins.

METAL AFTER COLLECTED AND MELTED They are made into blocks called ingots.

Turkey recycles old shıps and other kınd of vehıcles,too..

Unlike other recyclables, aluminum can be used over and over again. Also resarches shows that by vehıcle recycling industry of our country earns more than ıt spends. Each ingot is made up of 850 thousands drink cans! Ingots are used to make new cans.

PAPER

Before recycling industry ın the 80’s Turkey’s paper productıon was under 40%,now with recycling Turkey produces twice of the production in 80’s AFTER pıcked up,PAPER IS DE- INKED. CLEANED AND HEATED BY THERMOMCHANIC MIX IT GOES TO PAPER MAKING MACHINE.

USED COMPUTER,LAPTOP AND CELL-PHONES,BATTERIES RECYCLING IT IS HANDLED BY NOKIA AND A COMINICATION COMPANY,TURKCELL, IN TURKEY.THEY PICK UP THE SECOND HAND AND WASTE CELLPHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND RECYCLE THEM, TOO. USED BATTERIES ARE PICKED UP FROM SCHOOLS,OFFICES,HOUSES,HOSPITALS.

USED OIL RECYCLING USED OIL IS SO DANGEROUS FOR OUR NATURE.ENCLOSED BY 4 SEAS,TURKEY GIVES GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THIS PROBLEM. BESIDE WASTE- PAPER,GLASS,PLASTIC,M ETAL;OIL IS ALSO PICKED UP FROM HOUSES,SCHOOLS,REST AURANTS FOR RECYCLING. AFTER REFINING, OIL IS USED FOR BIODIZEL AND FOR OTHER INDUSTRIES.

IN TURKEY ALL THESE RECYCLING PROCESS IS HANDLED BY GOVERNMENT, INSTITUES &COMPANIES. IN THIS PROCESS THEY COOPERATE WITH CITY HALLS,SCHOOLS,HOSPITALS AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. THEY ORGANIZE CAMPAIGNS TO PICK UP ALL THE WASTE MATERIALS. THEY RUN EDUCATIVE AND SOCIAL SEMINARIES. FOR MORE PARTICIPANTS THEY REWARD PUBLIC(bikes, money, laptops) FOR THEIR EFFORT IN RECYCLING.
