Kentucky Transportation Cabinet What is transportation? The way we move things and people from one place to another – Roads, bridges, airports and waterways! Who makes it happen? Civil engineers, designers, technicians, biologists in many specialties: Environmental, Geotechnical, Materials, Structural, Construction, Transportation, Water Resources …

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet When we build a road, what do we consider? Numbers of cars: Two lanes or four lanes? Intersections? Safety: Signals? Guardrail? Limited access? Ditches and slopes? Cost: Right of way, construction, utility lines The Environment: Wildlife? Air quality? Water?

Kentucky Watersheds A watershed is the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place. In the continental US, there are 2,110 watersheds. You can find yours on the EPA’s web site!

We all live in a watershed! Kentucky Watersheds Place holder for local watershed info, photos, etc. – Make it your own! We all live in a watershed!

What happens when it rains? Kentucky Watersheds What happens when it rains? - Water hits the ground and travels down the slope - Pervious Surface - Soaks into the ground water - Impervious Surface - Travels along the hard surface, picking up non-point source pollutants

Nonpoint Sources & Pollution Kentucky Watersheds Nonpoint Sources & Pollution - Agricultural and crop lands and residential areas - Urban runoff and energy production - Roads, construction sites, and eroding stream banks - Irrigation practices and abandoned mines - Livestock, pet wastes and faulty septic systems

EnviroScape FIRST RUN Enviroscape: Explain, your corner of the watershed? Let kids name parts of the landscape, etc. Rain over the clean environment (undeveloped); include a fish sponge in the “reservoir.” Have them note the results of the groundwater. SECOND RUN Have students set up or “develop” the EnviroScape with buildings, equipment, and the pollutants. Rain over the developed environment; include a fish sponge in the reservoir for this second run. Make sure to tie in to the impacts of transportation (outreach, environmental controls during construction and maintenance; in the daily operations).

Depends on what you want to do, who you work for and where you want to live, but … National average for entry level civil engineers is about $43-44,000 private sector and about $41,000 in government Seven out of the top 10 highest paid salaries after graduation are engineers

Engineering Tech: $2,500 per semester to complete an associate’s degree Work, and be paid, each summer your on scholarship Guaranteed job placement after graduation … work year for year to pay back scholarship Apply by March 1 in your senior year, or thereafter Qualifications Graduate of a Kentucky high school or high school graduate who is a Kentucky resident Meet the admission requirements of the university to which you are applying ACT of 24 or higher (engineering only) High school experience, etc. Conditions Work one year full-time for the Transportation Cabinet for each year that you are on scholarship Maintain GPA 2.5 on 4.0 scale Maintain 12 hours/semester and complete 30 total hours each school year How to apply Fill out an application Copy of transcript Copy of official ACT score report 2 letters of recommendation 1) Counselor or Principal; 2) Math teacher Submit application *You must apply separately to University DEADLINE IS MARCH 1
