Key Points for Today’s Lesson Review last week’s class Moses delivers the second address to the people of Israel before they cross over to the Promised Land This is to remind them of the limitations that God has placed on their behavior – for their own good and continue prosperity Moses reviews the 10 Commandments Moses reminds them to love and obey the Lord

Last Week God delivers strong enemies into the hands of the Israelites in preparation for their entry into the Promised Land – Sihon – Og Moses is not allowed to cross into the Promised Land – punished as the leader Moses reiterates the requirement to obey the laws and decrees of God and not to worship idols Initial cities of refuge are established in the east Land of Sihon and Og given to the tribes of Gad, Reuben, and half of the tribe of Manasseh

Pentateuch In Context Man can experience God’s blessing through trust and obedience Genesis – man is a finite creature made in the image of God, fallen in sin, unable on his own to enjoy a relationship that God Exodus – human sin leads to enslavement Leviticus – reveals more fully that man is a sinner and that he is different and separate from God Numbers – shows redeemed sinners enjoying the benefits of atonement but fall away Deuteronomy – God loves us, we should love God

Historical Background Title in Hebrew is ‘elleh haddebarim – meaning “these are the words” English title Deuteronomy means “second law” in Greek – However, it isn’t a second law, it merely restates/explains the law as Moses already given Written around 1406 BC, shortly before Moses dies on the plains of Moab Written by Moses – See 1:5, 9; 5:1; 27:1, 8; 1 Ki 2:3; Matt 19:7-8; Acts 7:37-38; Rom 10:19

Historical Background Continued Contains primarily history and instructions and is similar to Leviticus –Preached, not taught All events take place across the Jordan river from Jericho on the plains of Moab Within a few weeks prior to Israel’s entrance into Canaan

Geographical Background Israelites traveled from Mt. Sinai to the plains of Moab – East of Jericho and the Jordan River However, not a direct route – Proceeded from Sinai to Kadesh Barnea – On Canaan’s southern border Failed to proceed to the Promised Land from Kadesh Barnea because of unbelief – Wondered 38 more years in the wilderness God finally brings them back to Kadesh, then led them to the Plains of Moab on Canaan’s eastern border Book of Numbers picks up in the final days leading up to Israel’s crossing of the Jordan river as outlined in the book of Joshua

Summary and introduction to the second address – Similar to 1:4-5, summarizing all of chapters 1-3 – True essence of the law and righteousness consists of loving God with all their heart Mosaic Law had two purposes – Revelation of Himself, mankind, and the essential requirements for their relationship – Regulate life of the Israelites religiously, governmentally, and domestically Remember, the regulatory purpose of the law ended with the death of Jesus Christ (Jer 31: and Heb 8:7-13) Introduction (4:44-49)

Introduction – Moses refers to the Mosaic Covenant (vs. 2) – Essentially an amplification for the new generation Basis for the Ten Commandments – God is who He is and that He had provided redemption for His people – God always gives first (grace) then asks for a response (obedience) Ten Commandments – Each is covered briefly in scripture Ten Commandments (5:1-21)

God states that the Israelites had done well in committing themselves to obey the Ten Commandments (vs ) – Indicating great respect for God’s holiness God reveals that, unfortunately, the people would not retain this attitude (vs. 29) God reveals the rest of the covenant only to Moses, not all the Israelites (vs. 31) – Moses later reported this revelation to the people Key message of this chapter is that the proper response to God’s word is reverence to Him Concluding Narrative (5:23-33)

Observe the principles (vs. 1-3) – Provides the reason for obeying the law: God’s blessing in the form of long life, peace, prosperity, and long life – Fear of God is the respect that comes from appreciation of His character Essence of the principles (vs. 4-5) – Explanation and implications of the first commandment – God is presented as the one true God requiring complete devotion Exhortations to Love God (6:1-5)

Instructions for remembering and teaching the great truths to the generations that follow – Deuteronomy is always aimed at the next generation – Relives the past with the present generation Parents are to diligently use opportunities to teach their children to be dependent upon God – Were to place scripture holders on their body, doorframes, etc. – However, Jesus later condemned pride in these physical objects (Matt 23:5), not their use of them Teach the Principles (6:6-9)

Israel’s devotion to God would be tested – In prosperity (vs ) – In adversity (vs ) – Israel would be asked to kill all the people in Canaan, but leave the buildings intact Israel was to remember the past – God explains how to more fully transmit a realistic awareness of the true God to the next generation – As we learn later in the OT and NT, Israel (Judaism) wrongly concludes that covenant keeping was the basis for righteousness rather than love and devotion – Refer to Luke 11:37-53 God Exclusively (6:10-25)
