What is the Human Genome Project? The Project aims to decipher the genetic code hidden in our genes, the basic units of heredity. Each of the 46 chromosomes (23 pair) in your cell, contain thousands of genes made up of DNA! The human genome project is laying out a biological map of the 3 billion base pairs that make up all human genes. Human DNA is so similar, that only 1 in every 1,000 base pair differs. So far, in November of 1999, scientists have laid out the order of about 545 of the estimated 700 genes on chromosome 22, which has only about 1.1 percent of the genes in the human body?
