BEING A PAPER PRESENTED AT THE ONE-DAY RETREAT ORGANIZED BY THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS FOR MEMBERS OF STAFF IN THE DIVISION THEME TOWARDS REPOSITIONING THE DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS AND HALLS OF RESIDENCE FOR A UNIVERSITY OF THE 21 ST CENTURY. HELD AT THE NEW CHEMICAL ENGINEERING LECTURE THEATRE. TUESDAY 26 TH FEBRUARY, 2013

Protocol I want to congratulate the Acting Dean, Division of Student Affairs, the Vice-Dean and the entire members of Division of Student Affairs for the trust imposed on us by the University Management to hold this retreat programme. With this arrangement, I believe the entire Division and Halls of Residence will be armed with details of repositioning for a University of the 21 st century.

 Therefore, I want to commend this synergy, and hope it gets sustained over time to help us further reposition the vision and mission of the University of the 21 st century.  It is on this opening note, I say thank you for the honour given me to present this paper.

2.0 ORGANOGRAM OF DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS DEAN VICE-CHANCELLOR VICE-DEAN DEPUTY REGISTRAR MANAGEMENT OF HALLS OF RESIDENCE A.OARSAR GUIDANCE & COUNSELLOR PAR STUDENTS

3.0 The word “Administrative” is from “ADMINISTRATION”. According to Collins English Thesaurus Dictionary, the word administration means management, government, control, overseeing and supervision. - Administrative: directing, supervising and regulatory. The word “support” means help, encourage, bear the weight of or confirm From the definitions given above, we can infer that Administrative support is the supervisory roles rendered in line with the regulations and laws that govern an Institution or Organization. From the foregoing, the Administrative support in the Division of Student Affairs are the helps and supervisory roles that could be offered in the Division in order to fulfill the purpose of its establishment.

 - Heart of the Institution  - Sensitive to Control  - Caution in Handling  - Implication on the image; Middle, State and Federal.

 - effective leadership (student and Staff )  - effective performance, monitoring and measurement  - ensuring that the strategic plan is achieved  - ensuring quality in service provision  -ensuring regulatory compliance  -providing confidence both for students and staff  -information services; bursary awards, scholarships and grants.  -processing and collation of students’ results and data for NYSC  - students’ record keeping

 - Guidance and counselling Services  - speed up decision making; prompt delivery of decision extract  - release of error-free minutes of meetings  - communication of circular to students appropriately  - external affairs and co-operative services  Encouraging students to join approved and registered clubs, societies and associations  - Effective and prompt processing of registration of students’ Associations

 * Commitment to organisational vision, culture and values  *Administrative tolerance  * Role modelling on the path of Administrators  * Developing oneself – seminars, conferences, workshops, reading relevant papers, journals...etc

 We must all team up towards repositioning the Division of Student Affairs and Halls of residence for a world class University of the 21 st century.  Let us all join hands to ensure that the right thing is done.  Thanks for listening.
