Welcome to Family Night All you need to know about 4 th grade

Bus Passes and Dismissal Forms Must be in writing and be in the office before noon of that school day. No telephone changes will be accepted. When writing a bus note, please include the following information: Name of student Address and name of other student if applicable Duration of the pass Bus # Dismissal forms- all possible names

Attendance Policy Excused Absences Please note that after 6 excused absences determined by parent notes, a doctor note will be required in order to have an excused absence for the remainder of the year. –What constitutes an excused absence? 1. Death or severe illness in the pupil’s immediate family. The number of days excused for a death will be determined by the circumstances involved and will be kept to the minimum necessary as determined by the principal/designee. 2. Illness of the pupil. Medical and dental appointments will be excused only for the time required to complete the appointment, unless specified by the doctor. 3. Religious holidays and practices. 4. Court appearance when the student’s presence is required by subpoena or citation. 5. Driver’s permit/license test, which will be excused for a portion of the day. 6. One (1) day for attendance at the Kentucky State Fair. TARDY= 1) arriving after 7:35 am 2) signing out before 2:35 3) sign out and in on the same day Mr. Arvin will call if you are absent!!

Medication Prescription medication may be taken at school with a medical form filled out by the doctor & parent. Present form to the school nurse. Medication must be in original container with dosage and name listed.

4 th Grade Behavior Policy Each 4 th grade teacher has her own incentive program to acknowledge good behavior. See inside cover of assignment book for the behavior chart. PIP – Personal Improvement Plan

MAP Measure of Academic Progress Will take MAP testing 3 times a year Adaptive test Show at what level your child is ready to learn First Testing Session: Aug. 20, 21st Scores discussed at conferences/ sent home with report cards

Accelerated Reader Homework: Read 20 minutes every night, fill in page numbers read, and get AR log signed. When a quiz is taken and passed, students earn points toward AR goal. 60% is passing according to the program; however, we encourage a test average of 85%.

Accelerated Reader Students should be at 50% of their goal by the middle of the quarter (mid-term) 30% of the reading grade comes from: –Percent of AR goal achieved –Percent of correct answers on the quizzes AR is averaged in with Daily Review tests

Math Common Core Standards more rigorous Ex: The perimeter of a rectangle is 22 inches. The width of the rectangle is 6 inches. What is its length? Please look over your child’s homework each night.

What do the extended response scores mean? 4- Distinguished 3- Proficient 2- Apprentice 1- Novice

Short Answer Questions What’s different? –Smaller space to write a response –Can be answered in about 5 min. –Score of 1 or 2 Students still need to prove their answers.

Daily Review Purpose: 1.Continually review learned material (spiral review) Ex.- Native Americans (3 rd grade) Kentucky History (4 th grade) 2. Encourage goal setting so that students are self-motivated learners/setting the ground work for life-long learners

Daily Review Grades: Students will not receive a Daily Review grade on their report cards. Daily Review scores for each area are averaged in with the subject’s grades. Weekly, students keep track of their progress through graphing scores.

How can you help your child be successful? Review incorrect answers daily during the week. Should be marked with a red pen or highlighter.

4 th grade homework policy If missing an assignment: –Student may be required to complete the assignment during his or her recess. –If the student chooses to complete the missing assignment at home that night, he/she must still see the teacher for a short time during recess.

The National Junior Beta Club Western Elementary School 4 th Grade Selection Information

Academic Team Try-outs will take place towards the end of September. Historically, only th graders have made the team. Recommended study materials: –The New 1 st Dictionary of Cultural Literacy –The 2014 World Almanac –

Purpose The National Junior Beta Club is a student-led honorary society. Students with a cumulative 3.75 GPA, above average leadership skills, and strong character will be invited to serve. The National Junior Beta Club is a service organization (primarily) and a social organization (secondary). Our motto is, “Let us lead by serving others.” This club is sponsored by Donna Combs, School Counselor, and meets during the school day.

Selection Criteria 4 th Grade Students must earn a 3.75 cumulative grade point average for the academic school year. All Proficient/Distinguished scores on the final PAS Test The selected students may have no more than 10 behavior clinics for the academic school year. The selected students must receive ratings of 4s and 5s on the Teacher Recommendation Form detailing their character and leadership strengths. Students meeting this criteria will receive a written letter of invitation to join The National Junior Beta Club no later than 2 weeks after the final day of school. Students who submit the $20 membership fee will become candidates for induction in their 5 th grade year at Western Elementary School.
