At a high school in Oxford, the teacher wanted the students to help find a solution to the problem of bullying. First, they defined bullying: frightening or hurting other people. So, calling people names, hitting them or taking their pocket money are all examples of bullying. In order to solve the problem, the teacher and the students created a bully court. The court is made up of students only; each class sends one representatives. The court members meet regularly, and they organize a court session when there is a serious problem. The bully court meets in the school library.

The court operates like a real court of law. First, the victim and the suspect each tell their side of the story. Then, if necessary, the court recommends that the bully be punished. But as Ivy, a court member, explains, “We try not to punish people. We try to prevent further incidents.” Helen, another court member, says that the system works because “young people generally find it easier to talk to each other than to adults.” Anyway, the results speak for themselves; there are fewer bullies at that high school today, and the students feel less threatened. “The whole atmosphere is different now,” they say.
