Building and running an association in an international setting

History Informal group from 1995 dealing with EU framework programmes Need for broader view and strategy – EU not enough – professionalisation – moving towards RSO instead of EU Office Initial discussions in spring of 2007 and inaugural meeting in November 2008 Expected number of members: 150

Status Broad membership (180 members) –mostly universities but also –public funders –private funders –companies –hospitals –organisations –research institutes Individual membership at EUR 100/year

Activities Courses –Induction course –Strategy course – might be open outside DK –Toolbox courses Pre-award Post-award –Course on legal issues for non-lawyers –Course on how to write a good proposal

Activities Study trips –Brussels –Dublin –USA –Lund Working groups –Humanities –Simplification –Managers

Activities Conferences –Annual conference – varying topics –NIH – also becoming a Nordic network now –International Organisation of Research Management Societies (INORMS)

What makes it work? Sincere interest to share knowledge and experience to develop the profession We are colleagues and not competitors Committed volunteers who are willing to spend time for the common good Benefits of volunteering: great network and many contacts and recruitment advantage
