Monday 2/10/14 Grab a Bellwork Sheet up front Get out your books and read pages Answer the following questions 1.What are the two conclusions that Morgan came up with? 2.If two genes are linked, what can be said about their inheritance? 3.How does position on the chromosome play a role in crossing over between genes?

Today Go over Meiosis Quiz Transgenic Organisms Online HW #2 Genetics Review sheets

Objectives 1.Understand the relationship between gene position and gene linkage. 2.Understand what a transgenic organism is and how we create them

Meiosis Quiz

Late Work

Transgenic Organisms

What are they? Lets start with what they are NOT: – Not a half man half unicorn – Not half of anything....

What they are... Transgenic organisms are made by inserting a piece of recombinant DNA into the genome of a host. Lets talk about recombinant DNA

Recombinant DNA Joining DNA from 2 or more sources using enzymes to “cut and paste” pieces together

Use plasmids Plasmids are small, circular DNA molecules found in bacteria, which can replicate on their own, outside of a host cell. Put the recombinant DNA into a plasmid and it makes copies on its own.

Transgenic Organisms Reread pages While reading think about these questions 1.How could GM crops help you and your family? 2.How could GM animals help you and your family? 3.What is your opinion on the spider-goat? Do you agree or disagree with the gene splicing of these two organisms? Why?

– Enviro pig video Why do you think no one has eaten the enviro pig? Would you eat it? Why or why not? Why is phosphorus dangerous? What effect would it have on the food chain without the enviro pig? Why do you think it takes the FDA so long to approve the consumption of enviro pig?

Examples Remember spider goat and enviro pig

Quick Review Linked Genes Transgenic Organisms

Your Job TRANSGENIC CREATIONS 1) Be sure to have already read about (or discussed) transgenic organisms in class so you understand the definition and function of these organisms in society. 2) Work individually. 3) Think about various plant/animal organisms that may have genetic traits that could be beneficial to people, other animals/wildlife, crops or the environment. 4) Choose a “base” animal or plant to work from… then decide what other organism’s trait (or DNA sequence) could be inserted into the base organism for a specific use. 5) Describe or draw (on poster board) in detail how this new “transgenic organism” would look and act… and what its specific purpose would be. 6) List all positives and negatives about this new organism. 7) Give the new organism a name. 8) Describe what product or service would come from the new organism… and how it would benefit people, animals, crops or the environment. 9) Give the new product or service a name. 10) Find ways to market the new product/service with catchy advertisements, logos, jingles, etc. 11) Present all ideas and sketches to the class… then field questions. 12) The transgenic organism you create must be original and realistic.
