What is on the dam? The photos have captured the imagination of bloggers across the internet including Jolle Jolles, a 25-year-old zoologist working at Cambridge University. 'I have a great fascination for goats,' he said.

Sustainable development By the end of the lesson you will; 1) Have explained why it is important to be sustainable 2) Have explained the different ways that the forest can be managed sustainably 3) Have evaluated the effectiveness of the different strategies used in Costa Rica Geographical Terminology Sustainable Nutrient cycle Ecotourism

What different ways is the rainforest impacted? How do these changes affect the ecosystem How do the changes impact on people? What are the positive impacts of this change? What are the negative impacts of this change? How can the impacts be reduced? Add in as much detail as possible to the spider diagram below

To start Task; Write down a definition of sustainable. Sustainable; Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future generations.

Theme; Nutrient cycle Water cycle YOU Erosion Climate Soil Mr Tarr Trees Pigs What are the effects of Rainforest Deforestation? Task You have one minute to talk to the person next to you about each theme How will they be affected by deforestation Good luck  Changes in Biodiversity - Removal of the forest causes the loss of plant species. Animals are forced out as their food supply and habitat are destroyed. Many rainforest species have become extinct and others threatened.  Changes in Hydrology - Without the trees the water cycle is disrupted. Interception and transpiration are both reduced and surface runoff increases. Water and silt pour into the rivers, making them flood.  Changes in Soils - Without trees to protect it, the soil is easily eroded. Torrential rain removes nutrients via surface runoff and leaching with the soil becoming infertile. Surface runoff on steep slopes can cause gulleying and mudslides.  Changes in Climate - Transpiration is reduced and evaporation increases. This leads to a drier climate. Deforestation contributes to global warming because trees use up carbon dioxide during photosynthesis. As a result sea levels will rise and the world's climates could be affected.  Indigenous Indians - These have great knowledge of the uses of plants and animals in the forest and many could be used in medicine with new drugs etc.

What do you think? Task 1; Around the room are 4 different methods of sustainable development. Find them and make notes on each type of development.  Agro forestry  Sustainable logging  National parks and reserves  Harvesting the forest. Task 2; Each table will represent the views of one of the groups below. You should say if they will be for or against the idea You should explain why you think this.  Local tribe  Hotel owner  Local business owner  Logging company

Case-study 2; Costa Rica Task 1. Watch the following video clipclip 2. Make notes on the different ways that the forest can be protected

Sustainable management; Task 1. Each of you has one fact card 2. You need to make notes on your section 3. You then need to be ready to teach some one else in the class your facts and figures ProtectionHow will it help protect the forest? How will it help the people of Costa Rica? Negative impacts Wildlife corridor Debt for nature swap Ecotourism

Case study 2; Costa Rica development Task 1. Each of you has one fact card 2. You need to make notes on your section 3. You then need to be ready to teach some one else in the class your facts and figures ProtectionWhat is it ?How will it help the people of Costa Rica? How will it help the environment? Wildlife corridor Corridor of rainforest from Mexico to the far south of Central America that is protected Rainforest will not be damaged and so people can continue to live in the area Less flooding in the area Ecosystem will not be destroyed – climate will not be affected Debt for nature swap Costa Rican government protects rainforest in return for debt reduction Spent $26 mill on projects so far (2007) Ecosystems are not damaged and so people can make money through eco-tourism and Agri- farming in the forest Less destruction for profit = better for the environment and plants and animals living in it 52% of country now forested EcotourismPeople come and visit the local area to appreciate the nature People earn money from it = better SOL / QOL High value market that benefits local people (guides) Ensures that there is economic value (1.25 bill) in the rainforest = no destruction

What are the different views? Task;  Complete the following table  Make sure that your explain your answers using the key phrase “this means that” ; GroupFor sustainable development; Against sustainable development; Local tribes Government officials Local businesses Logging companies

Brainbox; Task You are going to be in teams of 4 You need to elect one person to come up to the front They need to talk as long as possible about one topic Longest talk = points Most points = prizes

Sustainable development By the end of the lesson you will; 1) Have explained why it is important to be sustainable 2) Have explained the different ways that the forest can be managed sustainably 3) Have evaluated the effectiveness of the different strategies used in Costa Rica

What have you learnt?
