By: William Golding

People’s primal instincts are often stronger than their nobler ones when creating a society. CIVILITY VS. SAVAGERY The problems in society are related to the problems in human nature. Authors often use their stories to make statements about their personal or political beliefs.

How does environment & experience affect the development of rules? How does human nature affect behavior? How does Golding use setting and characters in Lord of the Flies to express his ideas about people?

Most of the characters, actions, and objects symbolize larger ideas. What is symbolism? When an object represents and idea (i.e. heart=love) Golding’s novel deals with the conflict between the rational mind and primal instinct.

Words associated with instinct… Words associated with the mind… ???????

The novel takes place during a fictional nuclear war. A group of British school boys are flown out of England to protect them from the horrors of war. However their plane crashes killing all of the adults on board. The boys remain stranded on the tropical island to fend for themselves…

The Coral Island A story that most boys and adults in England would have been familiar with.

Written in 1858 A group of boys gets stranded on a deserted, tropical island. The major characters are Jack, Ralph & Peterkin. It’s an adventure story with a happy ending.

We’ll See…
