US HISTORY CH 15 Review WWII

1. Racism discrimination based on prejudice or ethnicity 2. Blitzkrieg- lightning war- use of tanks and air power

3. Prejudice- an adverse opinion formed without just grounds or sufficient knowledge 4. Appeasement- policy of giving in to demands of nations to prevent war

5. Isolationism- foreign policy that said stay out of the affairs of foreign nations 6 Ethnic relating to a large group of people classified according to common race or national origin

7. Atlantic charter- agreement between US, Britain and 15 other nations for protection that would lead to the United nations 8. Kristallnacht- night of the broken glass or the beginning of the holocaust

9. Operation overlord- Code name for the D-Day invasion of June 6, Auschwitz, Buchenwald- Concentration and death camps in Poland

Stalingrad- turning point of war in Europe as Germany is stopped from further movement east Hiroshima and Nagasaki- On August 6, 8, 1945 Atomic bombs dropped on these two cities to bring war with Japan to a close

Dates November 9, Kristalnacht or night of the broken glass begins the Holocaust December 7, Japan attacks Pearl Harbor June 6, D-Day invasion August 6, US plane Enola Gay piloted by Col. Paul Tibbets drops Atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 9,1945 – War Ends in Japan Official date August 15th

Short answer essay 1. Why did the US use the Atomic bomb when it was apparent that we would defeat Japan without it? Although the US would probably defeat Japan an invasion of Japan would require a period of direct combat that would lead a large number of US casualties. It was believed that dropping the bomb would save up to 1,000,000 lives
