Welcome to SCH3U Grade 11 Chemistry: University Preparation (Pre-AP Chemistry)

Textbook: Mazza et al, 11 Chemistry, published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson.

Top five reasons for taking Grade 11 Chemistry. 5. To fulfill your parents’ dreams. 4. There was no more space in Drama. 3. To get into medical school, dental school or engineering. 2. You’ve always wanted to know what will happen if you mix with. 1. To learn Chemistry.

What we’ll be studying... Unit 1Matter, Chemical Trends and Chemical Bonding Unit 2Chemical Reactions Unit 3Quantities in Chemical Reactions Unit 4 Solutions and Solubility Unit 5Gases and Atmospheric Chemistry

How you will be evaluated Tests* Laboratory* Quizzes/notebook*/assts Project (TBA) Laboratory Exam* Final Exam

Knowledge/Understanding (K/U) Inquiry/Problem solving (PS) Communication (C) Applications/Making Connections (MC)

Breakdown of Final Grade K/U30 % PS 25 % C10 % MC 5 % Laboratory Exam 5 % Past Avogadro Exam (AE) 2.5% 2011 AE (percentile) 2.5 % Final Exam 20 % 100%

Tests & Quizzes Quizzes—some open book Tests—usually every two chapters. Tests will be the most challenging component of the course.

U of W Avogadro Exam Grade 11 Chem Exam taken by > 5000 students 40 multiple choice questions A past paper ( ) will be written in class in early May. Counts 2.5% of final grade. Past papers (with answers) available on-line. Google: Avogadro Exam. Download NOW; use for test preparation, too Avogadro Exam (Thursday, May 19, 7:30 am) percentile grade counts 2.5% of final grade.

Keys to Effective Learning Pay close attention in class. Ask and answer questions. Take excellent notes.

Stay organized. Access our website. Make good use of class time.

Complete HW FREE OF DISTRACTION. Look at HW Qs before doing the text reading. Get extra help when needed. Study regularly; not just before tests and exams.

Keeping Good Notes your name, subject title, etc clearly displayed no loose sheets begin each two-chapter section with a labeled divider quizzes, labs, handouts, tests to be filed with appropriate chapter/unit; tests at the end

a piece of plastic or cardboard (eg cereal box) at front and back of binder to keep front and back sheets in good shape relatively neat and well-organized notes notes will be marked at every test

Late Work A deadline is not a suggestion. Work not submitted at the start of class on the due date will automatically be given a grade of zero... but... will be accepted late, with a one letter grade, penalty, until the marked assignment is returned to any one of my 11 Chemistry classes. Way around this: Speak to me before due date.

Missed Classes It is your responsibility to cover missed work. Be proactive.... Extra help as required, but you must take the first step.

Lates Late slip is required to enter class after the published start time. Lates are tracked. Repeated latecomers assigned community service

Now let’s get busy...
