Shading Pencils & Light Source Art 10

Shading Pencils Usually range from 4H to 9B HB pencils are for general everyday use

H Pencils -harder leads, lighter lines -higher the # the harder the lead -higher the # the lighter the lines -good for drawing details - good for guidelines to erase later

B Pencils Softer leads, Darker lines – higher the number (ie:9B) softer the lead and darker the lines Good for shading Good for making a solid black

Pressure Using the same pressure with different pencils you will achieve a variety of values

Value Definition – all the shades of grey between white and black. Drawings should always have a variety of values Atleast a dark, medium and light

Light, Medium, Dark Value adds depth Value helps a flat image look like a 3d object

Light Source Very important when shading Know what the light source is (lamp, sun, moon etc..) Know where it is located compared to the object you are shading (above, below, to the left)

Light Source The darkest shading shading will be on the side of the object furthest from the light source, wherever the light does not touch. You can leave you the part where the light hits the most white. These are the easiest ways to begin shading

Depth Shading makes this circle appear as a 3D sphere.

Shadows

Highlight & Shadow

Value Scale Using a ruler create draw a long narrow rectangle as seen below Divide the rectangle into EIGHT even parts. Leave one end rectangle white and shade the other end rectangle as dark as you can. Do your best to shade the 6 spaces in between to show a gradation in value
