Security Software Systems Ltd SECURUS Presentation to Scole Primary School 29th January 2008 By Andrew White ICT Solutions Children’s Services

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Cyberbullying What is cyberbullying? What does the latest research tell us? How can schools/parents deal with cyberbullying? The DCFS Guidance

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Any kind of bullying that is carried out by electronic medium. An aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual, using electronic forms of contact, repeatedly and over time against a victim who cannot easily defend him or herself ’ What is cyberbullying

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Cyberbullying There are 7 types including: 1.Text message bullying 2.Picture/video clip bullying via mobile phone cameras 3.Phone call bullying via mobile phone cameras 4.E mail bullying 5.Chat-room bullying 6.Bullying through Instant Messaging (IM) 7.Bullying via websites

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd York study 4 year study by York St John University & Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, 2002 – ,227 participants aged years 7 – % of total sample reported receiving nasty or threatening texts or s More young females reporting than young males General frequency rose over the 4 year period % %

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Who do those bullied tell  Around 30% of victims of cyberbullying do not report it to an adult  Most victims are likely to tell a friend rather than a parent or a teacher  Figures are similar to findings among students who have been bullied ‘‘normally’’

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Key points known about cyberbullying Cyberbullying occurs most frequently amongst girls Those bullied less likely to report it Difficult for those bullied to escape from it Wide dissemination –once material is released on the Internet, control has been lost Lack of closure Like all forms of bullying can be very damaging to self-esteem Those who do it may feel anonymous and it has an impersonal feel

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd How do victims feel? “One girl told me she would come and murder my parents and kill me personally. She made me cry so hard that I threw up.” “This one guy asked me how I looked and wanted to know about my body and stuff and I just flat out told him to leave me alone. I would have reported him but the ISP wouldn’t even let me block him without parental permission. So he bullied me and stuff whenever I got on. It was horrible. That was four years ago, and I still remember everything he said to me. Every exact word. I felt awful. I hated it. I wanted to tell my parents, but I was afraid they would never let me chat again…” “I feel powerless to do anything because I am so scared for my own safety…” …”it makes me feel bad and depressed…like I don’t want to be part of this world any more…”

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd Recent Study from York A recent independent study by York St John University into the impact of Securus monitoring software has revealed that only 51% of participating schools believe they were effective in dealing with cyberbullying on school PCs before installing this technology. However, since the installation of Securus, all felt confident that they are effective in dealing with PC based cyberbullying. Ninety-six schools from across the UK took part in the study with nine-out of-ten agreeing that Securus is effective at identifying online grooming and visits to inappropriate web sites. This compared with only half of schools who said they were effective at identifying these behaviours themselves. The majority of schools reported that before installing Securus, they felt their blocking and filtering software was insufficient for tackling inappropriate use of ICT and now have greater peace of mind for their pupils’ safety.

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd What can schools do? (Taken from DCFS cyberbullying Guidance) It is compulsory for schools to have measures in place to encourage good behaviour and respect for others on the part of pupils, and to prevent all forms of bullying. Ensure cyberbullying is included in AB policy Teachers need sufficient knowledge on how to deal with these forms of bullying Ensure students are taught about cyber safety- its risks and consequences Monitor e-communications on school site Clear policies on mobile phone use

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd What can schools do? (Taken from DfES cyberbullying Guidance) Blocking technologies need to continually updated and harmful sites blocked Work with parents and students to make sure new communications are used safely Security systems are in place to prevent images or information about pupils or staff being accessed improperly from outside school Work with police and partners on managing cyberbullying

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd What can I do as a member of staff? Teach children safe e-etiquette Apply school policy in monitoring e-messages and images Give pupils key messages on personal privacy rights, material posted on any e-platform, photographic images Take action if a child reports being cyberbullied or is bullying someone teach pupils the value of e-communications and the risks and consequences of improper use - including legal implications Keep up a dialogue with parents about emerging technologies their child might be using Ensure parents know what steps to take if their child is being cyber bullied or is bullying someone else

SECURUS Security Software Systems Ltd What general advice can we give young people Remember bullying is never your fault. It can be stopped and it can usually be traced. Don’t ignore the bullying. Tell someone you trust. Keep calm – try not to react as it will only make the person bullying you continue Online safety such as or have some useful tipswww.kidscape.orgwww.wiredsafety.org Don’t delete – keep as evidence
